Trailers (“The Quick Reviews”):
- Witness for the Prosecution (1957 Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton) — Charles Laughton, the grumpy and formidable barrister in the Witness for the Prosecution earns the film a 2.5.
- Some Like it Hot (1959 Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon) — A solid 4. It is worth your time. Monroe is so charming that she makes the film work by complicating it.
- The Apartment (1960 Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine) — The film’s length which is too long considering what it accomplishes costs it a higher rating. It earns a 2–regrettably. It certainly could’ve been greater.
- The Pianist (2002 Adrien Brody) — Even though we’ve been availed of the horror stories of the Holocaust Polanski’s direction brings it alive without apology. It is for this reason the film is ultimately a success and a 3.5 rating.
- The Avengers (2012 Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans) — It is a super super-hero movie. It is super-sized, super cast, and features amazing super effects. The scale is grand and it earns a 5 at my six-year-old’s request.
- The Wolf of Wall Street (2013 Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill) — The Wolf of Wall Street sells its viewers a bill goods, which is art imitating life. We’re brought along for the ride and it is a crazy one. This is a solid 4.
- Transcendence (2014 Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman) — If Transcendence’s content offers viewers one message, its flashy Sci-Fi effects seduce viewers into finding another. Worthy of multiple viewings–may be required before the film’s core message can be found. 3.5
