Seasons in literature invoke different moods in a story. Spring represents growth and youth, summer represents young adulthood and romance, autumn represents middle-age and decline, and winter represents old-age, death, and resentment.

Outcome: a certain time of year has a drastic impact on the story- so if an author makes note of that, it’s important.

Examples from the chapter: Sonnet 73 Shakespeare, “In Memory of W.B. Yeats”, “After Apple-Picking”.

Personal example:

High School Musical 2 (lol I know but this is actual facts) Set right at the beginning of summer break- a group of high schoolers(young adults) enjoy VERY romanticized months of fun- including actual romance, adventure, and everything that embodies summer literature.

From Foster:

"The Mamas and the Papas, expressing dissatisfaction with winter gray skies, and brown leaves, do some 'California Dreamin'' as they wish their way bac, to the land of perpetual summer" (186).

In the movie Monster House, the beginning of the movie starts with autumn leaves. They move the camera with the flow of the leaves to foreshadow a spooky Halloween. This set the tone for the rest of the movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one example where seasons are important. The movie is based around Halloween, but when the main character travels to the Christmas land, he takes parts of winter into his own land where fall is normally the regular season. The big crossover between seasons and the descriptive features of each season is a very important part to the story.

The Great Gatsby is a book that transitions throughout seasons. Gatsby dies in the pool which was supposed to be drained before the leaves from Autumn filled it, if that had been the case then Gatsby would not have been out by the pool that night. The book also describes heat and the transitions of spring to summer to fall in light detail throughout the book. It can be seen as an important part of the story even if it may seem minor, it is not because of how the seasons' characteristics are involved with different big events.

In Stephen King's book Misery, an author is kidnapped by a fan who is obsessed with his novels. He is kept trapped in her house and King uses winter as an isolating factor. The snow and cold weather causes the author to feel depressed and he lets his mind wander as he is stuck in the house. The setting being winter could not be more perfect and the descriptions that match the book allow for the reader to understand the loneliness related with winter except for in the characters case, it is worse because he is dealing with the pains of winter and being kidnapped.
