headphones

One of the many things that I find to be helpful while writing my senior project paper, and my papers for senior English, or even studying for AcaDeca, is music. Some people even say that music is a universal language. You could listen to a bluesy, jazz man from germany. Or a hip hop rapper from japan, maybe even babymetal*. But with the rule saying that I can’t listen to music while in class is wrong.

I find that when in a class of people who won’t shut up about what was on television last night, or giving a long and winded debate over aliens are real. I find that if my headphones are in I don’t pay attention, and focus on my work. There are studies put out every now and then saying. “Hey, if you listen to music when you work on something you are less productive.” Or it could take the other side. “Music helps you focus on your task at hand.”

Either way you say it, I don’t care. I listen to my music loud, because I know that I can focus on what I need to get done. Now there are two sides, one saying that it can be disruptive and lead people off task. Then there is a side saying, that it won’t and even saying it will be beneficial for people to listen to music.

There are flaws to both sides. With the first side, it is quiet in that room, except the tick tick tick of the keys, and the clock ticking. So people can hear everything that you say and do. With the second side, you could go to youtube and get lost in the music videos. Or to spotify and pay attention to what is playing and look for more music.

After dealing with this rule for four years. It is time to change the rule. Make it so the people can let the music play*. It is time that the rule be changed. It doesn’t really matter what you listen to, just that you focus on what your doing. Thats all the teachers want us to do. Be able to focus on our work, and to learn something while were doing it.

Great piece! I like this because it explains exactly how I feel as well. Music helps me focus on the assignment I need to get done, and I am able to get things done faster and with better quality. Rather than having to block out peoples loud conversations, I am able to get lost in my work and my music.

I agree with this all the way, although some people do find music to be distracting to them. However I am one of the many that find it useful to getting work done, because I could talk all class about anything that pops into my head. When the music is playing i am in a zone that is untouched by the surrounding noises and talking, and it focused to the task on hand. Great job!

I agree with this post so much. I tend to pay attention to more of what other people are doing when I’m not listening to music. But once I put my head phones in, I am more focused on what I am doing and I get more stuff done.

I fully agree. I used to like listening to music while doing work, but then my earbuds broke. Now, I’m lost in a world of just work, with no medium to help me focus. I can relate to your experience of being in class and having to listen to people yell and scream about nonsense and I don’t like it either. I would rather listen to something that helps me focus and get my work done than listen to people being annoying and not get any work done.

I totally agree with this piece. I think that students should be able to listen to music if that’s what helps them get their work done. I know that if I tune out the distractions around me and listen to music, I tend to focus more on my work. Great article!

I completely agree with you ! I feel like as long as a student it getting their work done, and the music is helping them stay focused and on task, then whats the problem with a student having it? Would you rather then be off task with no music, or on task with music? I am one of them people that focus better when I have headphones, and its easier me to zone and focus ! I loved this piece, very good job!

Well again I agree with you! I love listening to music it helps me concentrate while doing homework, class work just getting stuff done. Headphones in annoyance out, everyone knows when someones wearing headphones they want to be left alone. Music should be allowed in class, us students should be able to wear our headphones whenever we want. If we are in class then the teacher should be playing music so we can work because most of the class always has headphones and a playlist ready to go. Music is a big part of my life and so is school so they both are treated equally in my eyes(:

I see your point, and I agree with you that music with headphones should be allowed in every class. There is evidence that states that music can create a better focused mind. I would elaborate on that and say that only certain types of music actually do that. Music with heavy beats and rhythm can actually create the opposite effect because they are too distracting. Also any music with words can interfere with the inner stream of consciousness trying to form sentences for the paper. I mean, that can get pretty distracting…”Hamlet definitely wanted to kill his uncle because I’m sexy and I know it”. I simply cannot write and listen to words as well. Let alone music. I totally agree with you that music should be allowed to be played in headphones when working, but I would advise anyone who sees this to choose your music wisely.

I really agree with this post, I can’t really do anything without music. When I have my headphones in it improves my mood and makes me able to get all my work done. If the student is doing work why make it a problem.

I agree people need to learn when they should keep their moths shut when it come to class work. I also hate it when I’m trying to do homework and all I can hear is yelling about a show that happened last night.
