You need to watch this movie!-Hunchback of NotreDame

Genocide, racism, human deformities, sin, lust, religion, torture, insanity, and finally death. It may shock you to realise but these are the themes in my favorite Disney movie, The Hunchback Of NotreDame. Arguably the darkest disney movie and pretty much half of the movie flying over the viewer’s head if under 14, this movie is a treat to the older viewers. Having a more mature music score than other disney movies such as “The Little Mermaid” the Hunchback of Notre Dames was largely performed by both an Orchestra and a Choir. Such scores include Heavens light, Out There, God Help the OutCasts and what I believe to be the best villan song of all time, HellFire, where Count Frollo swears if Esmeralda doesn’t love him he will burn her on a pyre. Often during moments of high intensity a choir will let out a menacing kyrie eleison which translates to “God have mercy”. Such a moment is when out of the gargoyle’s mouth around Notre Dame magma is poured out on the soldiers below.

This movie is and has always been terribly underrated, yes it won awards but that is not good enough, for me to not believe it is under rated I must look to the person next to me and ask what is your favorite Disney movie and them saying The HunchBack of NotreDame. The genocide of the gypsies is because of the racism that is presented towards them by the french people, the main protagonist Count Frollo being at the head. It is said multiple times, “watch out the gypsies will rob us blind”. In the opening scene Count Frollo killed Quasimodo’s mom and almost throws him as a baby in a well just because they are gypsies. Secondly Quasimodo is deformed hence the name “Hunchback”, at one point his is tied down in a huge crowd and is had fruit thrown at him will the crowd laughs and he cries only to be spared by a gypsy. Sin is mentioned many times, in the song Hellfire, Frollo blames his sin and lust on a spell the Gypsy Esmeralda has placed on him, also after killing Quasimodo’s mom the only reason he spares Quasimoto is because he fears for his soul. The first time we meet the third hero in our story he is beginning his job as captain guard by walking in on Frollo telling the torturer to wait longer between lashes so it will hurt more, not really a kids movie huh? In the movie there are 3 talking Gargoyles humorously 2 of them are named Victor, and Hugo, the author of the HunchBack of Notre Dame’s name. Anyway they are talking but it is hinted many times that Quasimodo was actually insane because they would be alive up until the point another person walked into the room. And finally death surrounds this movie, from the very beginning to the very end, with Frodo riding a gargoyle all the way down into a pit of lava and into hell. I highly recommend watching this movie again as an adult and seeing through different, older eyes.
