Super heroes have had TV shows since 1943 with the first on screen debut of Batman. This was an attempt to get a wider audience for the super heroes and their comics. It worked very well and paved the way for the awesome super hero shows we all know and love today. In the Article I will go over the most successful shows in the superhero genre.
Lets start with one of the most Iconic superhero shows to Date. The Adam West Batman show is one of the best known batman shows due to the way bat man fought classic villains with his classic utility belt. This show also spawned one of the greatest batman gadgets ever: shark repellent. But this show had shown that people they wanted a serious batman and that’s what Warner Brothers gave them.
The best Batman show and arguably best superhero TV shows to date is Batman The Animated series. Batman the animated series gave the fans a dark grittier show than the last Batman. Much like the Tim Burton Batman movies. But there were a few similarities between the shows. Like Batman fought classic villains and fought new villains never before seen in any of the comics or TV shows . But unlike its predecessor where Batman had a gadget to get out of any situation this Batman relied on his detective skill and a minimum amount of gadgets to get out of situations. Warner Brothers also did an Animated series for Superman but it was not as good as the Batman animated series. But Is worth mentioning.
Now enough about Batman lets move on to two more recent shows which air on The CW. The new shows Arrow and Flash have taken the two lesser known heroes out of the shadows and into the spotlight. One of the things that make both of these shows great is that Both heroes exist in the same universe. This allows them to give both shows crossovers and further each characters story further. They started the shows like any other superhero show by giving the origins of the characters. But there is a slight twist with both shows. The Flash’s origin story was actually in an episode of Arrow then expanded upon in the first episode of the Flash. What is weird about Arrow though is we still don’t know our main characters full back story. Which I think was a big risk that the writers of the show took but in the end it helped give the show a bigger mystery than what was going on and definitely kept audiences interested.
Yes I know that all these shows are about DC super heroes. That is only because Marvel has had little success in the realm of television. But Marvel has dominated one source of media which DC has had little success in. Marvel has dominated the the realm of superhero movies with huge box office hits such as the Avengers but I will cover that in my next post.
