PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder may develop in someone if they experience a traumatic event in their life such as sexual assault, warfare or a serious injury. PTSD has been put under the category of an anxiety disorder. Usually when someone has PTSD they try to avoid things that will make them think of the traumatic event that they experienced. PTSD can cause an individual to have nightmares over time and recurring flashbacks of the traumatic event.
Most people think that the most common cases of PTSD are with those who have been in warfare but for those who have experienced sexual assault have a high chance of developing PTSD. People at risk of ptsd include, military combat personnel, victims of natural disaster, concentration camp survivors and victims of a violent crime. With the military combat personnel they may experience something called, “survivors guilt” for remaining alive while others died in combat. Even emergency service workers may be at risk. Basically anyone who is exposed to a violent environment. Physical trauma soldiers may face when serving in combat high increases the chance of PTSD developing.
Many veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have experienced serious emotional and physical hardships. In response the USMC ( United States Marine Corps) instituted programs to help veterans readjust to civilian life especially in their relationships with spouses and loved ones to help them communicate and better understand what they both have gone through.
