What’s going on this offseason with the Red Sox?

I believe that the Red Sox GM, Ben Cherington, has taken the right initiative to do his best to make my team a contending team in the 2015 season. We have acquired many different players from many different positions, sent a few unneeded players out  for assignment, and traded some of our players for other players who he believes can positively contribute the the 2015 offseason. I will be talking about what the Red Sox have done so far to better the team by trades.

Before the offseason even started, on July 31st, the trade deadline, Jon Lester (16-11, 2.46 ERA) was traded to Oakland for Yoenis Cespedes (.260 AVG) This played a big role in the offseason, however, because the Sox spent the first part of it trying to fill in another ace. Although the Sox weren’t able to get a true ace, we got a few really good starting pitchers. Again, none of them are a true ace, but recent history says the Red Sox can still contend.

One of the biggest trades the Sox have made after the regular season came to an end, was signing third baseman Pablo Sandoval (.279 AVG) to a 5 year contract. He had three teams to go to and he fortunately picked the Sox. I believe he will lead the team into the postseason again, after winning the world series with the Giants.

Another player we signed was Hanley Ramirez (.283 AVG) from the Dodgers. He came up in the farm system and after got traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, spent a while there and got signed as a free agent to the Red Sox.  I’m very glad we snagged him, since he is capable of being an elite player, and since we can always use superb arms in the field. These two are the biggest signings for offense so far this season, with maybe even more to come. Ben Cherington was smart enough to take out the old and bring in the new.

In my opinion, the biggest move we made this offseason for our defense has been signing Rick Porcello (15-13, 3.43 ERA). He’s the one who one-hit the Sox in the ALCS. We also snagged Justin Masterson (7-9, 5.88 ERA), and Wade Miley (8-12, 4.34 ERA). I’m still a little shocked we got Masterson, because of his recent rocky past. It’s only a one-year deal, so it’s like an insurance guy. If you looked at Mileys statistics in the 2014 season, it’s beyond me why he’s on the team. But that’s who we could get with our other players through trade agreements. I’m sure he’ll do great this next season, even though last season his ERA (Earned Run Average) and losses would be something I want to see on this assignment.

Through and through, I know the Sox will be a contender in the 2015 season, and I’ve talked about what they have done so far to better the team. I think each of these new players will all have their up and downs, wins and losses, high ERAs and low ERAs, hitting streaks and droughts. Last year the Red Sox had many injuries, and the players weren’t performing the best. That’s why they were in last place. This upcoming year, however, will be different, since some of our starters had a mediocre performance in 2014. That’s means there’s only room for improvement.
