How Lack of Sleep Affects People

There are many reasons why getting enough sleep is important. Lack of sleep causes a lot of problems for people. It can cause health issues, affect life choices, and change your appearance.

Effects from Lack of Sleep (compiled from sources listed below):

  • causes car accidents
  • impairs judgement
  • unable to think clearly
  • makes people forgetful
  • heart disease
  • heart attacks
  • heart failure
  • irregular heart beat
  • high blood pressure
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • weight gain
  • increased appetite
  • ages skin faster
  • dark circles under the eyes and puffiness
  • weakens immune system
  • depression
  • mood swings
  • causes people to go crazy
  • death

Studies have also shown that people who get 6 hours or less of sleep also have a higher chance of dying at a younger age than people who get 7 hours of sleep or more (Peri). It may not seem like sleep really has that much of an impact on your health at first, but over time it can cause serious health issues and other problems. I can definitely tell when I didn’t get enough sleep because I usually can’t think clearly and I forget things a lot easier. I also notice that I am not usually in a very good mood if I don’t get enough sleep. Most people don’t think it’s that big of a deal to not get enough sleep, but they don’t realize the effects it can have on them years later.

These are amazing facts! Is this all information that you already knew or did you have to look this up?

Going with the fact about dying younger, how much younger would you die if you were to get 6 or less hours of sleep?

Adding on to Kayla’s comment, how many times would it take for a person sleeping 6 hours or less, to die younger? And would this person need to do this so many times in a row, or just once and awhile.

How does not enough sleep cause diabetes? Does it just make the symptoms more prominent?

Do people who get less sleep die younger due to health problems?

@Bmadden15 Yes a lot of the time that is the main reason why people who get less sleep die younger. Lack of sleep causes many health problems which can lead to an earlier death.

That was very interesting and I’m glad you are telling more people about this. I have always been a fan of sleeping for a long time and I hear about people either bragging or complaining about not sleeping. Sleeping is healthy and I don’t think a lot of people either grasp that or choose to ignore it. Hey, did you also get some of your facts from our psychology class? I do remember talking about some of the affects of not sleeping like going crazy and dying.
