Animal cruelty plays a huge role in why in some people decide to become a vegetarian. People do not want animals to suffer so they can be fed when there are other things they can eat. There are organizations for vegetarianism and animal rights that support a strict vegan diet to prevent the cruel treatment of animals.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is a huge organization that is vegetarian and trying to stop animal cruelty. They say that “animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”. They support a strict vegetarian diet and say animals have the capacity to feel pain just like a human. You would not eat your family pet for dinner so why eat a pig or a cow?
Animals are being crammed by the thousand into disgusting, windowless sheds, wire cages, gestation crates and other confinement systems on today’s factory farms. Slaughter houses are cruel and many of the ways to slaughter an animal is not humane at all. These animals spend their short lives in crates and are abused. Then they are cut or shocked to death all so you can have a greasy McDonalds hamburger. For those who wish to sow the seeds of peace, we should be eating as peaceful a diet as possible. Eating meat supports killings animals for no reason other than humans’ acquired taste for animals’ flesh. Leo Tolstoy claimed that “vegetarianism is the taproot of humanitarianism”. For those of us who want “world peace” but eat meat, we are kind of contradicting ourselves.

If everyone became a vegetarian wouldn’t do you think it would ultimately stop animal abuse? Wouldn’t certain animals that we do eat over populate?
I really like your take on this up and coming problem and I think that this should become a more widespread idea. I think for me it would be hard to become a vegetarian, but I think its great for people to do this to try and help stop animal cruelty! I think that it was also a great idea to stick with your senior project topic for this so more people could become informed.
Very informative piece. This piece brings up a topic people do not like to talk about and brings awareness about animal cruelty. Is there a way that a person can slowly work their way towards being a vegetarian? Is there a certain diet that helps contribute to the transformation?
Good post! Are you planing on becoming a member of PETA? Even being aware of their abnormal euthanasia rate?
