For those who live under a rock… the Deflate-Gate scandal of 2014 was where the New England Patriots were accused of deflating the footballs they used during the AFC East playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Recently the league has been investigating the scandal. A recent report states that the Patriots’ locker room staff had something to do with the deflation of the footballs below the league-mandated low of 12.5 psi.
The league then questioned quarterback Tom Brady’s involvement in the case and asked him to turn over his cell phone, emails, and text messages. This is because text messages were sent between the locker room attendants mentioning the pressure of the balls and Tom Brady.
The Patriots organization and Tom Brady refused to turn over these documents and paid a hefty price for it:
Patriots: $1 million and future draft picks
Tom Brady: 4 game suspension without pay
Is this too harsh for Tom? In America we are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. Let’s look at some other punishments and compare them to Brady’s:
Ray Rice: Domestic violence – knocked out wife in the elevator of a hotel and dragged her body out of the hotel – 2 game suspension
Terrell Suggs: Domestic violence – beat his wife and pour bleach on her and his two kids and threatened to “drown her” in the bleach…twice… – and many more domestic violence cases – NO SUSPENSION
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson – allegedly headbutt girlfriend – no NFL punishment
But sure. Punish Tom Brady – after all, with no incriminating evidence it seems to make just as much sense as the lack of proper punishments that NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, seems to make quite often.
