Electronic Arts, more commonly known in the gaming industry as EA, is the single worst triple-A title video game company out there. For all that are unaware if the gaming industry were like the NFL EA would be this year’s Ravens. They’ve got potential to be something decent, but just can’t get it done. A fair argument would be the Battlefield series as their standout among the pile of virtual garbage that is EA’s cloud servers. The Battlefield series is one of the best FPS games out there, but it is not due to the amazing single-player campaign that you just played through for 8+ hours. Oh no the single-player campaign has no linear continuity between titles like other major triple-A games such as Halo or Modern Warfare.
EA’s most successful title is a standout because of the game engine it runs upon. Frostbite is an engine for most of EA’s major title launches including the most recent, Star Wars Battlefront. No matter how pretty it is to blow up the 14 year old kid from 5 states away with your LAW or to gun down the last enemy with your laser weapon neither takes away from how you as a company run and offer your services. Referring back to the last title mentioned the game cost the consumer approximately $60 to buy. Think now to yourself what a $60 purchase for a video game should include, the single-player campaign, a functional multiplayer, 10-12 maps for players to compete against each other on? If you happen to work for EA though you will not be including two of the those three things to your consumer base. Instead you will over the unlock of the maps with the release of an additional out of pocket cost of $50. Yes that’s right you bought a game that is not complete so you must now pay the company an extra $50 to get the, “full”, game that you thought you purchased a few months ago.
As an above average consumer of video games ranging from console to PC master race, I must say that when I become a customer I expect certain things from the product in which I plan to purchase. Call it demanding if you want, but you don’t spend $58,000 on a 2016 Corvette C7 and then be okay with it barely pushing over 50mph on the high way. Its the same thing I spend X amount of dollars for a good product at a decent price and I expect it to work and at least do what it is supposed to do. EA completely fell on it’s face with this blunder in their last title and its been the same in almost all of their online games, they pack up half of what is advertised then charge an absurd amount of money for the rest of it all.
Let’s say for some reason you’re okay with over paying for the product fine I get it you’re a pro gamer got to have the best no matter what. Try connecting to the online multiplayer go ahead I’ll wait… Not working? EA servers are down? Yes the thing that you really want to do, connect to your friends to have hours of fun doesn’t even work correctly the vast majority of the time. They always have a reason at first, but within the first 6 months EA has consistently stopped giving reasons to down time with online services and left the consumer in the dark literally waiting for the metaphorical lights to turn back on. EA how you’ve managed to stay afloat all these years is beyond me, but guessing by the rapid output of half done games I’d say it’s because you’ve lost touch with the real consumer base and are now a slowly declining company. The day EA shuts it’s doors will be the day a new triple-A super power will step up and we can all go back to riding on Riot.
