Food = Bonding… Usually
- Communion isn’t always religious
- Sharing a meal with someone is personal and represents sharing and peace
- Eating together usually means you are on good terms
- One generally does not eat with enemies (unless they are a mobster)
- If a meal is unsuccessful it represents the failed relationships between the guests
Examples:
- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
- The Great Gatsby
- Lady and the Tramp
In Lady and the Tramp the two dogs have a dinner date where their comfort around and fondness of each other is shown when they share a plate of spaghetti. Meals do not always end well, as is seen during a shared meal in The Great Gatsby when Tom concludes that Gatsby and Daisy are seeing each other. There is then an argument showing the failed relationships within the story, which eventually lead to Gatsby’s tragic end.

Addition to the rule: Sometimes a meal is just and meal. And whenever people eat or drink together, it’s communion.
Example: Grey’s Anatomy – When Meredith invites everyone over for dinner, that’s usually when the most feelings are hurt and when secrets get spilled. Rarely, though, does it ever show them eating together. They usually have a few drinks, and then fights and arguments ensue. Usually, by the end of the night, somebody is storming out, someone is drinking the rest of the wine, and another person is crying alone somewhere in the house.
