When I was four years old I was adopted by my grandmother. She was a woman who worked a lot and when she wasn’t working she was keeping herself occupied at her best friend Doreen’s house. I remember going over with her all the time and I would watch them play cards or I would go and play with Doreen’s granddaughter Kayla. It wasn’t long before my grandmother picked up her hobby of sewing which she shared with Doreen. I would watch my grandma and I would appreciate the way she would be so dedicated to making something. It took a couple months before she became good but when she and Doreen started to make things that came out good they started to sell them. They created their business that still thrives today known as Embroidery Buddies.
One day when I was 10 my grandmother asked me if I wanted to learn how to make a blanket. It didn’t involve sewing but tying the ends so that they would stay together. The first one I ever did she let me sell and I got 40 dollars for it. I started to get involved in the craft shows and I helped them out a lot. I finally decided I wanted to try to sew by myself and I got my first sewing machine for Christmas and I started up right away. They gave me a spot in their sewing room and showed me what to do. I gave up a couple of times but they kept pushing me to keep doing it telling me it will get easier if I don’t give up. I wanted to quit a couple of times but it gave me a connection with my grandmother that I didn’t have before. I never really spent much time with my grandmother until I started sewing. I got that time with my grandmother that I craved and like they said I eventually caught on and became really good. I started making money for myself and started to get involved more with their business and they taught me a lot about sewing.
Things changed as time passed and a lot happened between my grandmother and I and I moved and since I moved I no Longer sew anymore because I’ve grown and never have time for it between school and work. I still appreciate the art of sewing and hope to pick it back up one day. My grandmother still does it since she no longer has a job. She now considers that her job and makes unbelievably good things today including some of the jackets I wear. I think that sewing is what brought my grandmother and I together and is the reason we are still close.
