I was never really a sports fan when I was younger, however that all changed one night in January of 2012. That night I had gone to my grandparents to visit my aunt and uncle who were up from Massachusetts. My mom’s side of the family were major sports fans and had been excited to watch the New England Patriots host the Denver Broncos. Before that game was on some of my family where in the living room watching the Saints take on the 49er’s. I watched a little bit of the game but did not know much about the game besides the very basics. I had no idea who any of the players were on either team or the different positions for offense and defense. The only position I really had any clue about was the quarterback. If you would have asked me what a corner back, defensive end, linebacker, tight end or wide receiver was I would said I have no clue. That made the game difficult to follow. If I was asked that question today I would be able to easily talk about all the positions on the field. Right before the Patriots game was set to start my family had a little betting game. Each person had to put five dollars in the pot and the person who guessed the score the closest won. My grandfather paid for me and I guessed 43 – 10.
The next morning when I got up I wondered if I had won the bet because I had fallen asleep before the game was over the night before. Later in the morning my grandparents called and said I had won the bet. I was pretty psyched about guessing closest to the score when I had never watched football before that in my life. The Patriots would play in the next game and would win resulting in a trip to the Superbowl. I remember watching that game only to see my favorite team lose. After the Superbowl I could not wait until the next NFL season began. That season I watched every Patriots game along with any NFL game that was on.
Learning about football was hard for me. At first I knew nothing but after watching game after game after game, and playing lots of Madden I knew so much more. I knew about all the different types of plays on both offense and defense. Over time I was able to learn the rules and all the positions and players who played those positions. The NFL is now my favorite sport to watch. I hate missing my favorite team, the New England Patriots games. I will talk to anybody about football because I love talking about and watching it. It has been my passion for awhile now. That passion will never change.
