It was April 13, 2017. The sound of softballs hitting the glove rang throughout the gym. I was in the batting cage, waiting for the next pitch to come screamin’ in. Little did I know, I would be the one screaming. It all happened in a matter of seconds. Just as I was mid swing the ball took an unexpected turn and instead of making contact with the bat, it made contact with my arm. It was instant numbness and I could barely lift my hand. I knew something was not right, and I began to worry. Later on I wound up in the emergency room to find out that I had broken my ulna. It was some of the most discouraging news. Luckily, it wasn’t my dominant side, but I soon realized how much I actually used my other arm. This led to great frustration as it became very hard for me to do things for myself.
Due to the slight displacement, I was casted above the elbow to prevent any type of surgery. This really made things difficult because my arm was stuck at about a 90-degree angle. I was nervous to go back to school because I knew it would be a struggle opening my locker and transitioning from class to class, but luckily I have some great friends who were there to help me whenever I needed it. I got lucky to have two of my good friends around my locker. On those days where I was just struggling so much to get my locker open, they would automatically help without me even asking. They were a great help, and I couldn’t thank them enough. They may not think that something as simple as opening my locker was a big deal, but to me it was everything. It alleviated embarrassment as well as frustration and stress. Sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most, and I’m so grateful to have found such good friends who are willing to be there for me and help me whenever I need it.
On the contrary, there are times when my friends need my help. I find myself to be most helpful when school dances and prom come around. I have this niche for hair and makeup, and I would say I’m pretty good at doing both. My friends will ask me to do their hair or makeup for the dance, and how could I refuse? One, they are my friends and two I absolutely love doing it! It may not be a big help, but it alleviates paying someone else to do it. I don’t charge my friends, and I would never even think about charging them, that’s just absurd. Plus I wouldn’t call it helping if I did. I enjoy doing hair and makeup, and it’s good practice for me considering I’m looking to do hair in the future. Like I said, it’s the little things that sometimes mean the most.
In the end, true friends are those who are willing to help each other whether the task be big or small. While surfing the web, I came across a saying by Dior Yamasaki. It goes, ” Friends are the most important ingredient in this recipe of life “. I have to say that I couldn’t agree more. To live a life without friends would be pretty boring. Friendship leads to meeting new people and enjoying new experiences, and if you’re able to help each other along the way, it makes life a little tastier.

Rylea, I know you were very discouraged when you had to have a cast for a little while but I thought your pink cast was very stylish and I think you rocked it. I’m glad you had friends to help with small things like opening your locker when your hands were full, but you really are the hair guru. You are amazing at hair and are willing to help anyone, that’s what makes you such a great friend, your willingness to help anyone.
