Procrastination

Sometimes the Earth is cruel. Sometimes people deserve it, though. I tend to wait until the last possible second to do anything, and it often comes back to bite me. Recently I was trying to finish a semester worth of work in a week. I was working on my laptop when it died. My laptop, for some reason, doesn’t always give a low battery notification, which is quite annoying. I grabbed the charger and plugged it in, but it wasn’t working. I checked to make sure I had plugged the charger into the wall all the way, I made sure the two pieces of it hadn’t come apart, everything was fine but my laptop just would not charge. I was upset because hadn’t worked much on homework all year and the one time I was going to, I couldn’t.
I was on google researching something I could write about for this blog post when my laptop died; it was like the universe was saying “You need something to write about, here you go”. I was mad because I was finally getting into working on the assignment, which doesn’t happen often. I ran downstairs and threw myself on the couch, where my parents were watching a movie, and shouted that my laptop charger broke. However, I knew that couldn’t complain too much since I should have done my work sooner and I now had something to write about. After a few minutes of cooling off I walked back upstairs and wrote down my idea in my notebook, so I wouldn’t forget what I wanted to say. I then went to my phone to work on an essay on the google drive app. This is also when I learned that typing on a phone is not something I’m good at. It was hard to find tools that I needed, like italics, on the phone app and the keyboard was too small for me to use for more than a short text. I was fortunate to have a friend who lived nearby who let me use her charger for a while the next day, so I could use my laptop instead of my phone.
We had Monday off that weekend, my charger broke on Saturday, so I intended on getting a new charger on Tuesday. We had a snow day on Tuesday. I charged my laptop at my friend’s house on Sunday, the battery only lasted me through Monday, so I had to go another day without my laptop. I got back to school, finally, on Wednesday I got back to school. My bus is one of the first to arrive, so I had to wait for Tech staff to arrive before going to get a new charger. I walked down with one of my friends, a few minutes before first-period started, and there was a note on the door stating they would be back soon. The bell had just gone off, so I had to go to class. I had to borrow a charger from a kid in my third-period class. I didn’t get a chance to go back down to Tech until my last period class. I was glad to finally have my laptop back.
I know that many people, both good and otherwise, have horrible things happen to them or may affect them and they might not necessarily deserve that, but this is just one of my personal experiences with the Earth being cruel. I think that the Earth or universe or God or whatever higher power is out there, wanted to punish me for procrastinating so much.

Procrastination has been one of my biggest problems throughout high school, and I’ve been in some similar situations. I ended up doing around 75% of my homework in the week leading up to the end of the semester. I didn’t run into any major roadblocks like you did, but since I was so crunched for time I didn’t produce my best quality work. Maybe this will be the semester we all stop procrastinating with graduation looming in our future!

Procrastion has been a huge problem for me as well, I believe that it has held me back from reaching my full potential as a learner, well in school at least, I actually really like learning and knowing new things but for some reason in school its like I just mentally shut down or something. Maybe it’s because I’m lazy or something but I really think that its the way you are taught in school, I’m a visual learner and I only like learning about things that are interesting, visual and interesting are two things that school does not do well, most of my teachers will just lecture about or give me notes on something, and I try to pay attention and get my work done but I get bored or distracted and don’t get my work done. So my question to you is; what makes you procrastinate? Is it the way that the school is teaching you or is it something else?

Procrastination is one of the biggest problems I’ve had during high school. But I realized that I’m actually really glad that I didn’t finish on time, because I probably would have made one of the worst mistakes of my life, and I never would have known what would have happened between an old friend and myself, had I made that mistake. Procrastination is never a good thing, but in this case, it saved a lot of things from heart ache, and more trouble than it was probably worth. I kept saying to myself that if I didn’t have high school to finish, well, then there would have been a lot of problems. But I’m glad I went against what I wanted to do, all for the sake of my high school diploma.
