The earth sometimes can be cruel. The earth is a beautiful place with oceans, grasslands, natural parks and all its beautiful scenery, but for all the beauty we see we see just as much destruction. There have been many disasters over the years that show just how cruel the earth can be. In Leonard Pitts article sometimes the earth is cruel, he talks about some of the different disasters that have been experienced on earth and what it has done to different communities. His article talks about the devastation in Haiti and how cruel the world was to this country, hundreds of people were killed and communities destroyed. Recently Texans have experienced a tragedy brought on by the cruel world. The earth was cruel and flooded the state causing many deaths and a magnitude of destruction. However in all the cruel things the earth has done devastation isn’t what the world focuses on perseverance is.
When the Haitians were devastated by a natural disaster it would have been easy to give up and not try to rebuild. For them it seemed like the earth was more cruel to them and piling the cruelty on to an already struggling country. The author states ” sometimes though, you have to wonder if the planet itself is not conspiring against the humble little nation.” Pitts states that as a country they are poor and do not have the means to rebuild the way other countries can. However that never stopped them for trying their hardest and helping their country push forward. Like in Texas the world was unfairly cruel and effected many people destroying homes, business, and communities taking the lives of many and devastating families. Just like when the Haitians were hit it could have been just easy for the Texans to pack up and move away. Both communities could have walked away from the devastation and destruction. They chose however to look the cruel world in the face fight back. They came together and persevered they know it could take years to bring their state back to what it was but they will support each other and push through while building a stronger community bond. People can focus on the hard times and the negative or they can persevere and focus on what can come from this and how they can help to rebuild and make a difference.
These natural disasters effect me because I feel bad for these places and people having to go through these awful things. I am very thankful that I’ve never had to deal with something as bad as a natural disaster. This helps me understand that even through the bad times you can preserve and get through anything in life. Life will not always be sunshine and rainbows, sometimes life knocks you down and its up to you if you want to fight or coward down.

You bring up a very good point here that the hati people persevered rebuilding their country after such a great disaster wiped out much of their country. It takes a lot to be able to have the perseverance to rebuild something like the whole country and it is very inspirational.
