Choking on corn

When you think of someone dying you don’t think of laughing. Especially when it’s one of your family members.
My story is about one time my family and I were at camp. Our camp is on a lake and it’s beautiful. Trees all different colors sounded my family. There was red, yellow, green, orange, etc. The ground was freshly raked and the dirt hasn’t settled yet. Except my sister’s and I’s foot prints leading up to the water.
It was a sunny, comfortably warm Saturday. I rose up before dawn and woke Sandy up to go fishing. Once and a while we would catch fish for dinner. We came in when the sun was half way up and started to cook breakfast. Don’t worry we ate peanut-butter sandwiches and some fruit. Once everybody was done eating breakfast we headed out to the water again since we were still in our bathing suits. While we are swimming we play games. That day we raced to the bottom of the lake. You could feel the water squeezing your head each inch by inch the farther we went down. With each stroke it got more exhilarating. The only thought going through your head was how far can I go down. Sandy and I got to the marked rock at the bottom and pushed off. Flying up the water and releasing stress by the second. Our bodies got close to the top and we brased ourselfs for the cold air hitting the water drops on our skin. We only get to about half way up our body and skin back down. I was getting cold and wanted to go in. Stepping on the small rocks going in felt like little legos with the corners up. Painful but worth it.
I started a fire and had Sandy get the marshmallows. As the fire started up you could hear the crackling of the water in the branches and the rush of heat warming my body. We toasted the marshmallows over the flame then ate the gooey centers. We headed up to the porch and dried off while playing some card games. Trying carefully not to get the cards wet.
It came around supper time and it was my turn to cook that day. We take turns because we learned to cook different specialties. Anyway, I was cooking steak, corn, and potatoes. The scent of the potatoes cooking, drew the mosquitoes and other bugs. I started with the potatoes and the corn first because those take longer to cook. I wrapped each piece of food in tinfoil and put the correct seasoning in each wrap. I placed them on the grill so it would cook and char properly. I started the rub on the steaks and waited about twenty minutes to put them on. I put the meat on the grill and heared the sizzling of the meat. The juice dripping down created a big flame. After the flame calms down I turn the corn and the potatoes. Overall it’s fine.
I set dinner on the table and covered it so it wouldn’t get cold when everyone got together. I turned the radio down and took one of the seats at the end of the table. Everybody filed in with my father to my right and Sandy to my left. We started eating and I can feel each flavor of the food. The pepper from the stake, The sweetness of the corn and the bitterness of the potatoes. We talk while we eat and everybody starts laughing. Including my sister. Now to tell you a little information Sandy eats, chews then swallows. Normal procedure right? No, she is eating her corn and looks like a squirrel. Cheeks full of corn. So remember how we were laughing? Sandy couldn’t stop laughing and I can tell the food in her mouth is about to shoot out. My father makes the comment “there she blows” and it’s all over. Corn comes flying out of her nose and her mouth. But also back into her throat. She walks away from the table and there is little piles of corn following her. Sandy was choking on the corn but we are all laughing. Even harder after I point out that there is corn in the radio.
Little did we know that it wasn’t that funny. My sister was choking but I was laughing. After that we don’t really laugh when somebody is choking on food. Looking back now I can tell that laughing helped ease the pain for me. Moral of the story don’t laugh when somebody is choking and help them. Even if it will ease your pain.
