At Oak Hill High School, we take pride in what defines us: bad water, big trucks, and roofers. Although many people in our class, if not all, look at Oak Hill and think of all of the negative things that it has to offer, I would like to take this speech as an opportunity to highlight some of the good things that happened here.
Our class, in my opinion, is one of the closest classes that has come out of Oak Hill. Throughout high school, we always did things that brought us all closer together that no other classes have done. We have grown as a class throughout the past four years, becoming our own people along the way while still being together. Each year of our high school experience, there was something very interesting that happened. Freshman year, we put on a class production of Romeo and Juliet, which was a lot of fun for everyone involved. We also made history by winning Winter Carnival as Freshman, even though we never really knew how much of a big deal it would become to us, and we thought for sure that Matty Martin would win the competition for the seniors by wearing a dress. That year, we all thought that we had to dress up every day, and we were taught by the not so nice upperclassmen to walk on the right side of the hallway and not to congregate between classes. Noah Green also got locked in the locker room for hours after FLiP class.
Sophomore year, we put on our very first lip sync battle, which turned out to be a huge success and a lot of fun. Anna won the battle with her interpretation of “Firework” by Katy Perry. We won Winter Carnival for the second year in a row, yet again sending the seniors away with a loss. Shelby Wood and Andrew Davis bonded a little more that year, when Shelby opened the individual girls’ bathroom to see Andrew pooping. On top of that, there was an explosion in a young man’s pants. Good times, good times.
Junior year was a big year for our class. We won homecoming for the first time, and Winter Carnival for the third. We put on our second annual lip sync battle, which was won by the girl’s basketball team. Mr. Luchini’s AP English Language classes read The Great Gatsby and put on a hilarious play as a parody to the book. Unfortunately, we had to begin to talk about Capstone that year, which none of us enjoyed. Alex Hall also got questioned after somebody decided to smear poop on the bathroom wall. What mature high schoolers these people are.
Senior year was finally here, and while many of us were ready, some were not. Capstone was still continuing for us, with most of us procrastinating as we did with all other assignments. While struggling through college applications, we still were able to win Homecoming for the second year in a row, and started the competition of decorating the class sections. We put on our third annual lip sync battle, which Anna Dodge won yet again with the help of Sydney Drew. Shortly after that, we won Winter Carnival for the fourth year, making us the only class ever to win Winter Carnival in all fours years of high school. For the rest of the year, we struggled to balance membean with scholarships and extracurriculars, but we did it, and we did it together.
Class of 2018, thank you for all of the memories that I will never forget. Good luck to you all. Go out and be the best version of yourself that you can be.
