This is Oak Hill High School. I started at here partway through my sophomore year, and I can’t say I had very high expectations. When I first saw it I was confused because it looks like a weirdly large shack… Then I realized that it is a weirdly large shack. The ugly stained carpets and blue walls on the inside look a lot like my elementary school did- just not quite as nice. The ceilings are brown in places from past leaks, it’s never been a comfortable temperature, and something always smells a little bit off. The parking lot isn’t big enough, the halls are too narrow and crowded, and you probably shouldn’t drink the water. But that’s Oak Hill- right here in the Middle of Nowhere, ME.
A common phrase we all hear many times growing up is ‘it’s what the inside that counts.’ I’ve found that to be true of this school (for the most part). Even though the less than appealing facade (pretty sure that’s a membean word) might not lead you to believe so, this school is a pretty great place to be. Most teachers actually seem to care about how their students are doing, people are generally nice to other people, and the rules are pretty relaxed (for the most part). That’s not something that can be said about all schools, so we got lucky in that respect. A friend of mine who grew up in Philadelphia told me some of his high school stories which mostly consisted of broken bones and multiple arrests, or a weekly case of arson. So I’d say we’ve done okay.
So far all of the good has been contained inside of our shack walls. Now we’re all about to leave and disperse to various parts of the state and country. I hope that we can continue to be good people and provide a good image of our school. We’re all going to leave here with memories- good ones, bad ones, weird ones, you name it. But hopefully these memories can serve as lessons that make us better people. Most of us have worked very hard to get to where we are and deserve the diploma we are about to receive. Most of us. Nonetheless, we’re all here, finally at the end. I wish everyone luck on whatever path they may choose to follow.
