In the Blink of an Eye

Bam! T-Boned, in the blink of an eye. August 14th is a day that I never forget, especially when the roads are wet. I hydroplaned on the way home from dropping some of my teammates after double sessions in the morning, which I am so glad they weren’t in thew car with me when it happened, or I don’t know if I could forgive myself for it. What I’m trying to say is to not take things for granted and be careful.
On August 14th, 2018 around 9:30ish, after I dropped off some of my field hockey teammates and was on my way home. It rained the night before and a little bit in the morning, so the roads were wet. When I was heading home I drove through a puddle which made me lose control of my car and ended up on the wrong side of the road. I probably was going a little fast for this weather, but I didn’t know that at the time. I finally got a little bit of control back and tried to get on my side of the road but before I knew it….Bam! T-boned, in the blink of an eye by a dump truck. I ended up in a ditch and found my phone to call my mom because I didn’t know what to do. The people in the dump truck called 911 and soon enough the police were there. They wanted to keep me in my car, but then it started smoking so they had to get me out and when the police talked to my mom they told her to go stright the hospital. A short while later when the ambulance, they had to wrap my head mostly my ear because they think some glass cut it open. During the ambulance ride I came pretty close to passing out from hyperventilating, I mean I was scared and relieved at the same time because the girls I dropped of weren’t in the car. At the hospital they had a plastic surgeon sew up me ear and my chin. After that they put me in a room and gave me a lot of pain reliving medication and keep in mind that I didn’t eat anything that morning and only had about 8 ounces of water, which means the medication I was getting was on an empty stomach which made me throw up. I was there for about 5-6 hours, part of it was sleeping and then I got to go home and the car ride made me a little nauseous but fine. When I got home I discovered bruises all over the inside of my legs and called my mom over to show her and I ended up passing out in front of her which kind of freaked me out. I finally got to eat something while my mom called my Coach, Betsy, to let her know that I wouldn’t be at double-sessions anymore and she ended up coming over to see me before the night practice to see how I was doing. The next morning, after practice some of my teammates came over and brought me a tea & bagel from Dunkin and two get well cards; one was from the whole team and the other from just the freshman who also got me flowers. I spent the next few days downstairs on the couch and rewatching Fuller House. Don’t take you life for granted because something can happen when you not expecting it to and change your life in a good or bad way.
When you make a mistake you usually learn something, right? Well, after this happened, I wasn’t really scared of driving again unless it was in rain or snow and whenever I drive past a dump truck or any big truck, I tense up a bit. On days that it is snowing or raining I tend to drive under the speed limit by 5-10mph and always put my hand at 10&2. I straighten my back because that feeling of crashing again and the memory of the accident comes to my mind and doesn’t leave until I get to where I’m going. People always get mad when they’re driving behind me when the roads are wet because I don’t want to hydroplane again. Take it slow when you’re driving wether the roads are wet or not and always pay attention to the other people on the road. In conclusion, August 14th wasn’t the best of my life, obviously, but I will always remember it no matter what.

It’s interesting to learn about your accident from your perspective. I remember the day that the whole team found out and we were all so worried about you. We only got a few details about it, so it’s intriguing to see things from your perspective. I’m glad that everything turned out okay.

WOW!! I knew that you got into a car accident but I didn’t know what happened. That must have been so scary I can’t even imagine. You did a great job explaining everything, I had a picture in my mind of what was going on every second that I read this. I just got my license a couple of months ago and hearing these kinds of stories make me aware of stuff that I didn’t think could happen. Great job and I am happy that your okay!

I remember when I received the call from Rashel while I was on my 0900 break at work. At first I felt scared because I had no clue how bad the accident was, but then Rashel told me about how you were doing in the hospital. I remember joking to her over the phone about hopefully your third time won’t be the charm. Reading the details and what you were thinking during that time makes me think that I should have called you up to tease you just a little bit more. I didn’t have to worry about you getting out of the hospital to lash back at all my bad jokes… Ohh well….. So glad that nothing worse happened.
