My name is Jada Collins, and if you are at all familiar with me then you know that 1. I shaved off my eyebrows in 5th grade and somehow EVERYONE remembers and oh no they are not letting me forget about it and 2. that I am basically a makeup fanatic (and no it’s not because I shaved my eyebrows off in 5th grade..). I have been criticized many times over the years that I’ve been expressing myself with my makeup and clothing choices, people love to ask me why I wear “fake eyebrows” or why I insist on being so “cake faced”, or my favorite backhanded compliment of all time “you are so pretty you don’t need all that makeup”. Makeup has been a huge interest since I was very young, I remember watching my mom put makeup on and admiring how it enhanced her natural beauty and made her look like what little me saw as perfect. I can remember being as young as 10 years old sneaking out of the house with the slightest sliver of my mother’s black eyeliner hidden under dark sunglasses. I felt so confident and powerful and most importantly beautiful. I remember going to school on that very day and being told by my teacher that it was highly inappropriate for a girl my age to be wearing makeup out in public. I felt embarrassed and confused and I will never forget that day. I always wondered why there was such a stigma associated with wearing “too much” makeup or any makeup in general. Of course I have always loved myself just the way I was but I was always fascinated with the way that makeup could boost your confidence and enhance your natural beauty. After that day I started to express myself more so in my clothing choices. Middle school was the start of something brand new for little me as my mom caved and started to let me wear (very little) makeup after the many years I had been begging her to let me. Makeup and beauty in general sparked my interests mostly when I was a sophomore in high school. I started watching beauty gurus like Manny MUA, Lauralee, Sarah Fritz, Patrickstarrr, and Tati. I was really excited when I bought my first ever high end eyeshadow palette and contour kit. My passion for makeup made me practice hard at what I loved almost everyday. I have spent countless hours buying, reviewing, and testing out makeup on myself and I even started my own youtube channel so that I could teach others about makeup and beauty. Learning about makeup has sparked my fire and has made me realize that cosmetology is what I want to do as a lifelong career. I have taught myself makeup, and how to cut/ color hair but my passion has driven me to apply to cosmetology school. I will be starting classes in June at Aveda Institute and I hope to someday teach woman how to love themselves and be confident in the way that they express themselves with makeup and hair. I hope to make woman feel beautiful every time they are done in my chair and most of all I am ready to make what I love my career forever. They say that if you do what you love it won’t feel like a job and I feel the same way about learning in general.

1. You are beautiful no matter what Jada. 2. Do not let anyone tell you that you need to wear less makeup. Wear as much as you want girl and rock whatever you choose!
Jada, don’t let other people let you down by them saying stuff about your “Fake eyebrows” because 1. They AREN’T fake because I’ve seen you without makeup and you have eyebrows they are just super light and yes they are hard to see but they are for sure there! 2. You are the most amazing person at doing makeup that I have ever seen in my 18 years. Keep doing you and I’ll be your first customer when you open up your own salon even if it’s in LA
This was interesting to read because I remember you wanting to do my make-up when we were little to practice and now you sometimes help me with my make-up or hair for dance recital. I admire the passion and the determination that you have for cosmetology and I believe you will go far! <3
I love how you follow your dream. Do not ever give up because other people would say something about it. Follow what you want to do and always try your best. I love your make up hair and youtube channel!
I also do not understand what’s so wrong about wearing “too much makeup” or why people think it is inappropriate to be wearing makeup at a young age. I agree that it is a good way for people to express themselves, and even in some cases, boost confidence. I think you will do great in cosmetology school which in turn will open your world to many more opportunities and a great future ahead of you.
Makeup, as with anything creative is an expression of art, and is in turn used to express emotion and personality. One of the coolest and most interesting things is to show and express your art to others to see and appreciate. Keep up the good work!
I love how you didn’t listen to what others had to say and did what makes you happy! Even though I wear no makeup and have no clue what most makeup things are I know that you will make it big someday. Best of luck with cosmetology school, you’ll do great!
I think it is quite brave to stick up for yourself by continuing to do what makes you happy regardless of the outside perception or opinion. Being true to yourself and making yourself happy is hard to do when it seems everyone has an opinion about everything you do.
Your opening to this made me laugh. As you probably remember I also had quite a few problems with my eyebrows in middle school… the commas haunt my memory… I love how you look at makeup as enhancing beauty that is already there, not completely altering like most people say. Wearing makeup also makes me feel powerful and confident, but I don’t wear it often because of all the comments that you also get. I’m really glad you didn’t let all of these comments get you down and now you’re following your passion and going into cosmetology. Continue being you and slaying!
I love to see that after everything you have been through you still do what you love for you because you are focusing on yourself and how you feel about yourself. To bad nobody else does this and usually focuses on what other people say than on themselves.
I find it funny that not only do you find a way to put your makeup into your English work, but also able to put it in our marketing class. I am happy you’re following your passion however and finding a way to put it in your everyday life, even if the uses aren’t as conventional.
You are such a talented makeup artist and you are going to go far with that talent! The stigma that comes with makeup is ridiculous, kudos to you for standing your ground. Even myself, who doesn’t tend to wear makeup ever, supports you!
