A time I can remember that a fire for learning was lit inside of me would be at a lacrosse practice. I’ve always loved lacrosse ever since I first started in 6th grade. I played baseball ever since I can remember in tee ball. My parents always had me into sports and I liked them. Usually I got to blow off a lot of steam running around in sports, but baseball never really allowed me to blow off a lot of steam unless I was running around the bases. Even then it was never a guarantee that you’re going to hit the ball.
I remember first starting and practicing behind Carrie Ricker. Right from the start I loved it, basically just nonstop running, playing and having fun. It was a higher paced game I could get really competitive in. I got fairly decent at playing it, I have always been a fast kid and really energetic. I became friends with kids from the team and stuff too, and our parents got to chatting. That year went by good and overall I really enjoyed playing this new sport.
The next year was 7th grade and I was anxious to play. I remember liking it a lot and the long time away drew some nostalgia as we pulled up and stepped out onto the field. That year was a little different, the competition was different. We played with the 8th graders and that’s when kids started to get kinda big. It was still really fun but it was a little harder. After the first game I remember looking back at that and not being too satisfied with the way I performed. I had a small fire flicker on inside of me then. I wanted to grow, become faster, learn stick handling better. I wanted to get better to keep up with the other kids and become an expert. I got better that year and learned quite a bit, but I still had some stuff to learn.
8th grade I pretty much had the hang of it and I played with my stick in the summer and stuff and a little bit in the off season just toying around in the yard sometimes. I had my fundamentals down pretty well, I just tried to learn some tricky moves and work on my accuracy of my shot and stuff. It was fun and as that season ended I was a bit nervous and anxious for high school coming up. That’s kind of a big moment for kids as they go into high school.
As I got to high school I started off pretty well, I was on varsity all of the four years and I made a bunch of friends, so it wasn’t as bad as expected looking back on it. Although there were still their moments. The new lacrosse practices were harder, and the competition in games got harder too. Especially as a freshman going up against some seniors. I started to participate in a travel team in the summer and doing clinic throughout the year. My dad saw I was good and wanted me to excel in it. I enjoyed it and loved playing it and wanted to get better as well for the next coming years. I continued varsity lacrosse throughout all my years, coming up on my fourth year.
Playing lacrosse and every sport I’ve played in high school made me want to learn more about the health of my body. I started to lift and go to the weight room in order to get stronger and leaner. It would help me in sports and everyday life keeping me mobile even in the years far later in life. It also lit a fire there and I learned a lot about my body and my health and wanted to have a great health overall. Starting playing lacrosse lit a fire in me that carried throughout years and is still continuing and opening up new opportunities to learn.

Good for you for finding a sport that you love and that you got to play for a while. Also, it is really cool that you have found a fire for learning about your health and body, It is always good to eat well, especially in sports, and for your future like you said.
I like this story I remember in I think seventh grade we both wanted to play soccer, that year was by far my favorite year of sport with you, Travis, and me playing just for fun we ended up becoming a really good team and the practices were even more fun. I will never forget that year and when you were in practice on the field slowly pulling down your shorts and we made eye contact.
Gabe, such a great piece of writing. I enjoyed the travel through time and how you got better every year to eventually be able to play and compete for 4 years of varsity lacrosse. I also liked how you kept pushing yourself to work harder, become stronger and faster and letting it show in your play. You’re a great athlete and it defines who you are. Never lose sight of your goals and keep grinding. Again, nice work.
I like how you talked about how you didn’t she away from a challenge and instead attacked it head on. I also like how you talk about how sports benefited both your physical and mental health. I would also love to here about the relationships lacrosse created and how they have affected you.
I strongly relate to you and this scenario where a fire was lit to venture on a long term journey of hard work and dedication. I started playing lacrosse the same year as you and remember immediately having a love for it. I wanted to excel and prepare for later years of high school so I too joined a travel lacrosse team during the summer. I realized it helped being healthy and fit in sports in general, but realized if I wanted to be good in lacrosse I would need to be able to perform like an athlete. So throughout these years of lacrosse I always watch my diet and work out consistently in order to make a name for myself on the field. I love your comparison to it lighting a fire and I completely understand the same feeling. Keep it up!
I can relate to this as I also share the love of lacrosse and as a teammate of yours I can see you love the sport. Meeting you when we were playing travel in the summer showed me you really did care about the sport and wanted to get better at it. I can tell you have a real passion for the sport and have learned a lot since when i first started playing with you. Glad a sport lit a fire in you like it did in me. Keep up the hard work.
I really enjoyed reading this post, I can strongly relate to this post cause I use to play baseball and made the switch to lax cause I was looking for a more competative and lively sport. I always worked hard at lax cause it was just a fun sport to play. Tis peice is well written with good detail.
I can relate to this but at the same time I don’t I played baseball from Tee ball to 6th grade and I stopped to do my work I can honestly say it did the complete opposite.
I can relate to this because I too did not like Baseball and thought it was a boring sport. Lacrosse is probably my second favorite sport I have played my whole life, watching you practice everyday I can tell how much you love the game.
I’m glad you found something you loved. it always makes it more fun when you love what you are doing and im glad you found a tactic to get all that built up energy. I can really use the imagery and see you just running around on that field like a banshee.
