The time was around two in the morning, I could hear the sound of beeping. I had no clue what it was. I get up from my bed and start walking around without turning on the light. I search for an alarm clock that I prank my sisters with thinking I forgot to turn off the alarm. I then can’t find it and so I turn on the light seeing the smoke detector going off. I see smoke enter into my lights rising into the ceiling. I freak out in panic going straight upstairs to only see light outside. I go onto the porch to see the flames overtaking my house. I then go to my mom’s door and try to open it but it seems to be locked. I knock on the door a couple of times but there is no answer. I knock even more and louder as my fear takes over me. I then start to yell at the top of my lungs and start trying to kick down the door. She finally opens the door I relieve myself. She says “What do you want” really calmly because she didn’t hear all the yelling and banging I was doing. I answer back and say the house is on fire. Her face fills with fear. She says to me get your sisters and I will get your brothers. She goes straight to the living room because that’s where my brothers usually sleep. They weren’t there because she forgot that she told them to sleep in there room for tonight. I go downstairs to wake up my sisters. Looking outside I see the flames get bigger and the light shines brighter. I then go to my sister’s room and wake them up. My sister Mariah says “the neighbor’s house is on fire?” I say no our house is on fire she says “Oh” and my sisters get up. I meet my mom with my brothers downstairs at the front door we head outside onto the grass. My mom is on the phone with nine one one. They say they would be there in fifteen minutes. Five minutes go by and a cop shows up to help. My mom says our dog is inside. The cop goes around the house in the back to where the fire is and he tries to take the fire out but there was no time. The cop puts us kids in the back of the car saying that we are safe. The fire trucks get there and they don’t have any water in them so they have to use my neighbor’s pond which took a long time to fill up the fire trucks. My neighbors come outside to get us so we don’t have to stay in the cop car. We go inside my neighbor’s house as we watch are house burn to the ground. I get a call from my dad that was out of state for the weekend and he thanked me very much. I get off the phone and the fire is finally put out. My dog is pulled out of the house but she sadly didn’t make it her name was Cotton. My grandmother comes to pick us up so we go to her house. I was so cold I couldn’t wait to fall asleep. I had school the next day so I didn’t go.
We went to the house to see what the damages were and the only thing that didn’t burn was the garage and my room. The only thing it did was create water damage. I couldn’t save any of my stuff in the process. A few months go by and I was nominated for the Red Cross for saving my family in the fire. I had to talk about my experience which was recorded and presented to a big audience. I then had to stand in front of a bunch of people to get my award for being a hero I was very nervous because I don’t like being in front of a bunch of people. Another few months go by and we are starting to rebuild our house. There was a fire sprinkler testing going on at the town office and our family was invited because we were going to have the first sprinklers in Sabattus in our new house. It was hard not having a house to go to after school. We lived at my uncle’s house for a long time. Then we moved into a rental house for a few months. The new house was finally built after one year. In the end, our lives got better again.
In conclusion, if a “mistake” happens to you there is always someone who is going to help out I forgot to mention in my story how I had no clothes so people reached out and donated tons of clothes for me and my family. We also got a place to live for a couple of months until we could rent a house even then it was hard because the landlord wouldn’t help out like cleaning up the yard or even cutting the grass. They also kept raising the price for rent. So my parents got money back from them because they went to court and won. In the end, people will help out until you’re “mistake” is fixed.

This brought tears to my eyes. You are very strong to be able to write about something like this. Your courage and bravery does not go unnoticed. Reading this post put me in your position – your writing techniques are superb, and the way you were able to take a tragic situation and look at it positively was beautiful. That is the person I’ve known, and it will forever stay with you. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of work with us.
It was a very sad, but good story. I’m glad to know you’re doing better. Although I can’t say I can relate to something disastrous happening to me like this, but I’m glad that no matter what throughout the process you still stayed positive and that in the end everything kinda got better. It’s a hard time losing everything, and even your loved ones. No matter what though, you will be remembered as a hero and what you did was an amazing thing whether you realize it or not. It’s amazing that throughout it all you continued to receive help and that had support in the end. It’s a great community that we live in!
I remember hearing about this at school a few days later. Although I did not know you well back then I still wanted to do all I could to help, and just hoped your family was doing well. I cannot imagine how hard it was for you to go through this and tell it again now. I am glad things seem to be better now! I am really sorry that happened to your family and really sad to hear about your dog that must have been hard
