It is very hard to laugh something off that is hard to go through or an experience or situation that is annoying to be going through but when an individual is able to find the good or humor in something, it really changes their attitude towards it and makes the situation way more bearable. The situation I am going to write about is a time when I was in middle school.
It was Veterans Day Weekend and we were planning to drive out to New York State to see our cousins and grandparents like we do on different weekends once in a while. The plan was to take Grammie with us to New York State this time. She would arrive at our house Friday afternoon and we would all leave right after school on Friday for the five hour drive to get out there. The plan was all fine and great until my sister Kaylee came home from school one afternoon not too many days before we were supposed to leave explaining that it turns out she would have a District three audition to go to for Band Class on Friday afternoon and she would not get back to the middle school until 7 or so. This piece of news was pretty disappointing because it would mean we would not be able to leave for New York State until Seven or so in the evening when Kaylee would get home from her auditions. We would not get there until midnight now instead of eight o clock or so Friday night like we would have. However, we accepted this change of plans and moved on.
Friday rolled around and Grammie made it to our house in the afternoon. When school ended, Kaylee went to her District Three auditions while the rest of us got ready to go. We decided to pack our supper and eat it in the middle school parking lot before Kaylee got back and we had her supper packed as well so we could leave as soon as she got back and she would eat in the car. However, the time rolled around that the bus should be getting back but it was not. We waited thirty or forty-five minutes without the bus getting back. By that point, we were all getting rather impatient, especially me. Finally we got a call from Kaylee that the auditions had lasted a lot longer than expected and that they were just leaving. This was really disappointing for all of us. Dad then decided that we would go home and just plan to leave really early Saturday morning and we would still get there by Ten or so which would be about when we would have woken up anyways if we got there Friday night. Dad would come back to pick Kaylee up when she got back to the middle school. However, this news did not go over well with me at all because I had been looking forward to leaving that night so much. I could not bear the thought that I would have to sleep at our house another night before leaving. It is because of this that I was crying pretty obnoxiously for a little bit and very annoyed at Kaylee’s field trip. I would have continued to be in a very bad mood until Grammie piped up in her funny Grammie way and said, “Just think, we drove to the middle school on a cold, dark night to have a picnic in our car in the parking lot for fun.” For whatever reason, this made me start laughing and be in a better mood. It was a funny thing to think about. I also came to terms with the fact that we would get there the next morning at about the time I would have gotten up had we gotten there Friday night.
Anyways, my ability to laugh at what Grammie said and then think of how silly and rather funny the situation was allowed for me to have a better attitude and be happier for the rest of that night. It made this set-back easier to deal with made my night way happier than it would have been. No matter the situation, small or big, one can always find something good in it and maybe even something that you might as well laugh at which is what happened to me in this situation. This situation was a success for me in turning a bad experience into something postive. I would not have been able to laugh it off if I had not willed myself to give in to it. When I did let myself laugh this situation off, I was able to have a much happier night, and even weekend. When anyone is able to laugh a bad situation off, it makes the whole experience or situation much more pleasant and able to be dealt with.
