Wet Decks

The summer going into my 7th grade year was a great summer, until with two weeks left of the summer it took a turn for the worst. I asked my mom if I could have Colby and Caleb sleep over and it was during the week so both my parents had to work the next day and my sister didn’t care what we did. As I convince my mom to let them sleepover she tells me some rules that we have to follow. She starts telling me the rules “You guys can’t walk around town, can’t ride the four wheelers and can’t swim unless there is an adult home.” Well that went in one ear and out the other. I was so naive, “yup, we will be good and not do any of those.” I didn’t actually listen to what she had to say. They came over and we had a good night, we stayed up late and watched some movies, some comedy some scary.

The next day came around and we woke up to my parents being at work and my sister still sleeping, even though she didn’t care what we did anyway. We immediately went to the four wheelers and started riding in the back of the woods. It was a hot summer day so we decided it was a good idea to go into the pool. When we first went in, we were just hanging around in the pool, not doing much. Then we thought it was a great idea to make a wave pool. My deck is about 7 feet off the ground and then there is a bench that was on the deck and the bench had a backrest. That added another 3 feet so it was in total 10 feet off the ground. We decided it would be a good idea to jump off the backrest because it was the highest point to jump off so it would make the waves bigger. As we went one after another after another for a little bit the backrest was getting drenched from our feet and getting splashed. It was my turn again so I get up on top of the backrest and I start to run and next thing I know I’m on the ground. Ten feet isn’t a long fall but still doesn’t feel very great. As I lay there on the ground in shock I look down at my leg and there was a big gash in my shin but that wasn’t the worst problem I had. I felt a tingling sensation from my palms to almost my elbow in both my wrists. I told one of the twins to go get my sister because I knew something wasn’t right. My sister came down and called my grandmother because she lives right across the street, she came over and brought me to the hospital where my mom met me.

I ended up with breaking both my wrists and had a cast in both my arms for 4 weeks. During these four weeks of misery I had a lot of time to reflect. I learned that it would be best for me to listen to my mother whenever she has anything to say. I had to meet my new 7th grade teachers with my casts on. I honestly wouldn’t take anything back from that day, it was a fun day till that point and then I also got taught a valuable lesson. Always listen to your mother.

The descriptive nature of this story really allowed me to imagine myself at the pool with you. We can all relate to a story like this where someone who is much wiser than us, most typically our parents, tell us something we don’t follow it out of childish rebellion and excitement and end up doing something stupid. I really enjoyed the way you tied it all together at the end saying that while it was a stupid mistake, you would not want to redo that day different again, even with the physical detriment it had on you for months after, and that learning the lesson is most important and it is okay to have childish fun.

The real story of how you broke both of your wrists is so much better then your shortened version of “I was just being dumb.” I personally have never broken any bones so I can’t relate to that part but I have definitely disobeyed my mom a good handful of times. Unlike you I still have no learned my lesson and I continue to do what I feel like I should be okay to do whether she likes it or not, I would never disrespect her wishes but sometimes she is unreasonable with her choices. I have wanted my own dog since I can remember and she always told me no but almost two years ago now she got my younger brother his own dog. This really made me mad but I knew I had to act smart about it, now that I am not in sports and I just go to school and work I knew that I had the most free time I have ever had on my hands. So early December of 2019 I decided to get my own puppy and my mom was livid when I brought him home but what could she do now? Nothing. I have never been so sure in my life about this decision and I do not regret one second of it. It has not been very long since I have had this puppy but everyone in both my households accept him now and there is no issue. I always have a new best friend, and this all came from defying my moms wishes. We all disobey our parents at one point or another and some times it turns out to be a mistake and some times it turns out to be something great.
