During my sophomore year of high school, my family and I took a trip down to Daytona Beach. Overall, I didn’t enjoy it. The weather was really hot from what I was used to but the hotel was pretty nice. It had a few pools and was right next to the beach which helped with the heat. I spent most of the time in the hotel room trying to escape the eighty-degree weather.
Because of the heat, I wasn’t in the best of moods during the trip and just generally annoyed. One particular night I didn’t fall asleep until very early in the morning. Upon waking up my stomach was rumbling and no one else was in the room. Everyone else had left to go to the pool or whatever they had decided to do for the day. Obviously being on vacation we went out to eat a lot and had very little in the ways of breakfast food. Being hot and hungry I looked on my phone to find any stores close by that I could grab something to eat. The closest convenience store was a Walgreens about one and a half miles away. I grabbed my bag and a bottle of water and set out on my way.
The walk to the store was uneventful. When I did arrive at the store I just grabbed some generic trash type food and a four-pack of monster energy. I stood outside the store making small talk with passersby while wolfing down my food. After slamming two of the energy drinks I quickly headed back to the hotel. Once back I waited around for a while before everyone started to get back from their various outings. My parents asked what I did during the day and I told them about my walk to the store. Normally they have very strong opinions so I was expecting them to either completely not care or blow up over something small. Instead, they just said nice and that I should take one of my brothers next time.
The ending of that story reminds me somewhat of the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. At the end of that movie, you expect Stitch to be imprisoned but instead, they say screw it because ohana means family and they let him stay on earth. The connection I’m trying to make is that even if you expect a strong reaction people sometimes just do not care. In my case, my parents didn’t care when they’re normally more strict about where I go.
