It all started on a Friday night, my boyfriend, mom and brother decided to go to the Lotus Chinese restaurant in auburn. We show up, get a booth in the back and get our food. My boyfriend and I on one side and my mom and brother on the other side. We were all talking and laughing when my boyfriend and I saw a cake come out of the back room and a few employees walked over to the table to the left of us with the cake in hand. My mom and brother talking with themselves did not get to witness the next few amazing moments.
In Lotus there is a front part of sitting next to the food buffet and behind it is the back sitting area. That night we decided to sit in the back and eat in a booth. Directly beside us was a long table where we could see down the entire length and that is where this huge family decided to sit to celebrate their son’s birthday. He was in a very special seat where they tied balloons to make it just for him. He wore one of those happy birthday plastic crowns and had the biggest smile on his face. As the workers started walking over to the table they sang happy birthday, the whole family chimed in and it got very loud. Only after a few seconds, on the first ” To You”, the waiter blows out the candles on accident and it goes completely silent. They scrambled around but luckily they had a lighter on hand. It took a few seconds to get it to light but they ended up getting it back to the way it was ready to start over. As the worker holding the cake went to take a deep breath to sing again she ended up blowing out the candle the second time. The more we watched the funnier it got, at this point no one was smiling, the cake had no lit candles and the kid was on the verge of crying. The worker tried to light it one more time but the candle was burnt out and not in the condition to light anymore. Everyone looked like they wanted the moment to end and the workers to go away. They ended up signing with no candles, wished him a happy birthday and ran off. At this moment my boyfriend and I had lost it, we were laughing so hard. The poor kid had a very sad birthday with many failures but for the rest of the night til we left they seemed to let it go and had a good night talking and eating. To this day we still laugh about it and how sad this kids birthday party was.
