Social media. Good or Bad?

Everyone uses at least one form of social media, whether they like to or not. Most adults have Facebook so they can post things going on in their life for the rest of their distant family members to see. Teenagers use Snap chat and Instagram to post pictures of themselves, but social media will have its pros and cons no matter who you are using it. Having social media has different effects on everyone who uses it. In my opinion, I think there are pros and cons. Some pros are that there are so many fun and cool things to do on social media, social media gives you a chance to express yourself publicly without anyone actually knowing you personally. But social media also has that very negative side to it where people post negative things about others. People will believe anything they see on social media, whether it’s fake news, rumors, ect.

A couple examples as to how social media can be harming and negative is body image or the idea of a “perfect life”. There’s a stereotype you feel like you need to follow where you eat healthy 24/7 and go to the gym everyday and you’re always caught up on everything in your life. I know I see the “perfect life” stereotype when I’m on social media. I see girls who wake up at 4am and do their everyday morning routines where it’s all perfect and it makes you feel bad about yourself. Now obviously there can be pros to this as well, where you see it as more of a motivation concept to inspire you to live more like how they do. But there is a big part of social media where it seems as if you’re living your life wrong because you don’t do all of those things or you don’t look the way society wants you to look. With perfect skin and a perfect tones body. Another con is people being able to post whatever they want, an example of this is all the Instagram pages being made at school, these students can just post pictures of whoever they want sleeping, slouching or even using the bathroom and it’s just considered normal and not a problem to some people because of how often stuff like this gets posted on social media.

Again, everyone has their own opinions on social media and how it effects them mentally. But in the back of any persons head who uses social media, they know there are negative effects to it. Lastly, I think social media users need to think more about what they post before they post it, and they need to limit their time on social media and enjoy life for what it is.
