We made it, we made it to graduation, WOW! We used to think 2022 was so far away but look at us now. Here we all are ending our high school career, Most of us will all be done with sports not playing in college, and a lot of us will also lose quite a bit of the “friends” we have now. I really put emphasis on friends because I know some of us will have friends from high school that stay with us for a while but in the long run, most friend groups leave high school and don’t ever talk much again.
I remember when all of us were in middle school and elementary sitting in the classrooms laughing with our friends and then one time in elementary school when we had just gotten new laptops the high schoolers came down to come and help us figure them out and show us how to work them. I don’t know about your groups but in mine, the high schoolers talked to my group about their experiences in high school and they’d tell us “enjoy the friendships you have now because in high school they won’t be the same” and let’s be honest none of us believed them I mean why would we, we were in like 5th grade. But now Look back at who you used to be friends with in middle school and take a look a who you are friends with now. I bet they are not all the same people you used to be so close with. I’ll even say it will most likely happen to me. Take a look at Josh and I, for example, we were never that close until we reached high school, and to be honest, after high school, Josh and I will probably never talk again but I’m still glad we had the friendship we had while in high school. I still value mine and his friendship along with anyone else I have been friends with in high school. Some of my favorite memories from high school are, sitting at the lunch tables with all my friends laughing and joking around with each other, and getting told by teachers we need to quiet down. Another one is senior prom, going with my girlfriend, and hanging out with some friends, and after leaving prom just go to hang out with some more friends to end off the night. It was all fun but let’s get back to the friends part, all of these people that I hang out with at prom or sat at the lunch table with, probably won’t be remembered in a year, because of all of us moving on to bigger things.
While we say “oh, I’m never going to stop talking to these friends”, for some that may be true but for most of us we will be too busy with college and life after high school. We won’t have time to talk to the friends we have now, so enjoy the time you have with your friends now and this summer. You never know you may not talk to them until Oak Hill’s 10-year reunion that half of us probably won’t go to anyway. In all seriousness, maybe the high schoolers back then were right saying value the friendships we have. At the end of the day, you never know who is going to be there after high school. I know I most likely, no offense, to anyone I probably won’t talk to anyone from high school much when I start college, but I still value all the friendships I have had with everyone in my class and in the years of growing up with all of you. Growing up with all of you has been fun, and I’m glad I got to experience high school and all of public school with the class that I am in. I just want to say thank you to everyone and I wish everyone the best in life after we graduate.
