Graffiti should be accepted as and is a form of art. On the other hand, graffiti is also a form of vandalism. When you’re walking around in a big city or just a town, you don’t want to have to see profanity written on the walls or inappropriate symbols or images. I think that there are appropriate ways and things to do graffiti on. It’s all about how you are doing it and the property you are doing it on. People like to express themselves with art and sometimes that way is through making murals on walls in cities or different things. In that case, I think that graffiti is art because it is making the world more beautiful.
When it comes down to it, graffiti is not good because of the fact that it is placed on private property and usually people don’t ask permission. “If it wasn’t for the fact that most graffiti is placed on private property without the owner’s permission, then it might be more recognized as a legitimate form of art” (Dolan). There are people who do it in a negative way and write things that are not nice and shouldnt be displayed freely. An example of graffiti being used in a negative way is usually associated with crime and gang behavior. “Gang-related crimes and violence are the crimes most commonly associated with graffiti” (“graffiti as vandalism”). This quote explains my claim because places with heavily vandalized areas will experience more crime behaviors then places that are not. As a result, it proves my point of graffiti should not be considered art if used as crime behavior.
Graffiti as art. If you are in a public place and you have permission from the owners I think that it is totally fine and should be accepted as a positive thing. I know for me when I see graffiti on the walls or sides of buildings I think it looks really cool and adds character to the world. It can help inspire people and make people help movements. “Like all other artistic forms, graffiti has experienced movements or changes in style. From the first tag scribbled on a subway train to the large, complex mural on a billboard, the movement has experienced change” (Dolan). Supporters of graffiti claim with me that art is a beautiful thing and it should be shared around the world. Especially when it’s inspirational work and can help change the world. My claim is significant to me because it is important that we put a stop to crime.
When talking about graffiti, there are so many different types of graffiti. Some is simply a monochrome collection of letters, known as a tag, with little artistic merit”(Dolan). When people use graffiti for crime and things like that, it should not be considered art. It is not helping the community and if anything, it’s creating more bad behavior. Going over facts and evidence on this topic and what my beliefs are, my belief is that graffiti should not be considered art in the way of crime and gang behavior but as a way to inspire people and make the world more beautiful.
My argument is that graffiti with the intent of negativity should not be allowed but graffiti with a positive intent should be. “The artist’s intention is to produce a work of art, and that must be taken into account when considering street art’s legitimacy” (“Graffiti as art”). Street art is something that comes way back from time. People only now started turning it into a way of bad behavior and crime. People take these artworks into museums to be viewed because they are so pretty. The word graffiti means artwork in a public area. Artwork means beautiful paintings and a way for people to show off creativity. That is graffiti not buildings with F*** on it. Graffiti should not be considered vandalism, crime behavior should be considered vandalism.
