Art of Destruction

Is graffiti art or vandalism? Yes, graffiti is vandalism. for many years Graffiti has caused problems in all sized towns and cities. There for becoming an argued topic that is commonly written about in schools. Graffiti can be beautiful but that doesn’t stop the fact that it may be destructive. It can demolish the original look of a property or even destroy it. In another case, graffiti is “Any passerby in an urban cityscape has observed the colorful, provocative, illegal “eyesore” that is graffiti.” (source 3). This illustrates that the act is hurtful even if it may look pretty, no longer making it art. art is peaceful, not destructive. But in addition to the colorful art, it is still not on property they own, and many don’t want to see it anywhere. making graffiti, not an art. many practices have been done to stop the destruction of the cities. In some places “Cans of spray paint are locked away in display cases”(source 1) this has lowered the rate of graffiti in many cities. Taking away the ability for individuals to steal the products.

Although graffiti can be beautiful and colorful, it can also repeatedly ruin a property by staining an area or ruining the original paint on the surface. in many cases, nothing can be done about it because it is nonconsensual art on a property. Some important words from the article are, “A friend of mine has had his fence repainted 7 times at least, and it took him a while to find out why it was happening!”(source 1). Graffiti can also lead to many other problems with specific people, particularly young men. graffiti can cause many side effects such as bigger crimes. which shows the inconvenience of graffiti. People using this type of vandalism later in life may experience other crimes that may lead to larger problems such as drug use. “most taggers are males between 15 and 23, and there is the concern that tagging may be a “gateway crime,” and may lead young offenders to more serious or dangerous crimes such as truancy and drug and alcohol use.” (source 4). Graffiti can lead to bad behavior and worse crimes taking a large effect in today’s world even though it is just “art”. Graffiti takes more than it gives contributing to mass amounts of pollution within cities. Art is not to be used in a conformation of destruction but to be done in a controlled area with permission.
