Laughter is often called the best medicine and is an essential part of being human. It’s secular to any culture or region and has been around as long as we have. As our character John, a 40-year-old office worker who sells home appliances over the phone, will soon know, laughter can reduce stress and anxiety; which is very good for our mental health and will make us happier. If we’re ever stressed about school or work, laughing through comedy or hanging out with friends can take some weight off our shoulders and help us feel better. I will explore the importance of laughter in the following story.
John was always serious and stressed about his work. Even though he was a bigger guy at 6’2 and 250 lbs, he would often skip his lunch break to make quota and was constantly overwhelmed. His more cheerful and charismatic friend Tom suggested they go see a comedy show at his favorite bar down the road later that night after work. His girlfriend was out of town for the week, and John was still single; so he had no responsibilities. Tom was a huge comedy fan and would watch live standup whether someone went with him or not. John wasn’t a big fan of comedy like his friend, but after some hesitation, he agreed to go.
He really thought this would be a waste of time, he already wanted to go home. But after the first comic came out, he was laughing out loud; They stayed for over an hour and were enjoying it the entire time. The duo found themselves extremely relaxed and rejuvenated, he wasn’t thinking about work the entire night and ended up loving it. He even found himself very productive the next day but without all the stress.
In conclusion, laughter is a very powerful tool that promotes good mental health. Laughter is a free universal reaction that’s common among every group, culture, and region. John discovered taking time for himself to laugh can be extremely beneficial to his well-being and day-to-day life. Without going to the comedy show and learning about laughter, John would still be in his old shoes, stressed and overwhelmed. It’s important to make laughter part of our everyday life and appreciate its good feeling and health benefits. By laughing John will live a longer and happier life.
