Call or Text?

Calling and texting have become a huge part of everyone’s life. Calling has been around for over 100 years, but texting recently took over people’s lives just in the last 30. Both calling and texting have their pros and their cons. If you want an answer quickly from someone, then calling would be ideal. If someone calls you wanting an answer and you don’t want to talk to them, you feel obligated to answer, as opposed to texting where you don’t feel obligated to answer since you aren’t directly talking to them. On the other hand, texting someone when you need a quick response is not ideal, since they might not answer you for a while.

Calling is a very efficient way to communicate with someone. You can talk to people directly, and hear their voices, and if you have a question or need a quick answer for someone it is a perfect solution for those. For example, I needed to know if I needed to pick up my friend for a hockey game, I was cutting it close and might be late so I called him and got my answer. Calling can have disadvantages; let’s say you want to avoid talking to someone, they call you and you don’t pick up, then they call you repeatedly. Now you feel like you have to pick up, so you do and now you have to talk to them.

Texting can be efficient, but only if the person you are texting wants to have a conversation with you. The major disadvantage to texting is people not answering you right away. Especially people who don’t want to talk to you or if you are confronting them about something, they might see that you texted them, but might not answer. Texting can be a good way to communicate with someone if you or they don’t feel like calling, so you can text back and forth and still have a meaningful conversation. Also if you are busy you don’t have to worry about hanging up and you can finish what you’re doing and go back to texting them.

I text people more than I call them, even though I think calling is much more efficient. They do both have advantages and disadvantages. The majority of the time, I don’t feel like talking to people directly, and with texting you have time to think of an answer before responding. Down the road in my life, I think I should transition to calling people more because a lot of the times that we talk to people we have questions or want to have a good conversation, which is easier with calling.
