Duke Ellington is a famous musician who lived from (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974). Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions. Some believe him to be the best major figure in the history of jazz. Duke Ellington’s music forked into other genres, like Blues, Gospel, and classical music. During Ellington’s life he wrote a book, “Music Is my Mistress” in 1973. The story takes the reader through a thrilling, exciting journey through Duke’s life. Every chapter being a name of a major figure in Duke’s life, you can learn challenges Duke overcame to become the famous musician he is today. Duke Ellington is known for a variety of famous quotes including “A problem is a chance for you to do your best” along with “Music is my Mistress, and she plays second fiddle to no one” (Duke Ellington – Music is my Mistress) Duke Ellington’s famous quote “A problem is a chance for you to do your best” I 100% agree with, I personally have examples and stories to follow this idea.
Throughout People’s lives they are met with difficult situations that make them stronger. With every problem there is a solution that takes dedication to solve. I personally have been put in many situations where I needed to find a solution giving me “a chance for” me “to do my best” (Ellington). When my truck broke down I was greeted with a problem and to fix it I needed to learn how to change the breaks on the wheel bearings. I am Lucky. I have people in my life that know how to do stuff like that, a chance for me to learn and do my best to fix the problem. Some might think that my claim is wrong and that some problems it’s better to let go and walk away. But I feel even by doing that you are in some way still doing your best. If you cant fix a certain problem that doesnt mean by walking away that you are giving up but getting stronger and having the courage to know you have been beaten.
Along with Duke Ellington there are many famous people that had to undergo problems to be able to strive. Take Stevie Wonder, while he was growing up he was losing all his vision but that didn’t stop him. He masters his skills and now has some of the greatest music ever made. It is incredible how someone can take a problem such as being blind and still be so talented in something that very much involves eyesight. Personally I would not be able to learn how to play the piano if I lost my eyesight. But not just Mr. Wonder had to overcome complications. Take Frankie Valli for example. Growing up, Frankie Valli was thrown into the music business at a young age, he got caught up with some bad people that ended up putting him in a 1 million dollar debt hole. But with this problem came the opportunity to be the best. He sang at every event he could until he paid all the money back. Frankie Vailli’s story is so inspiring to me, He went through so much hell and got little in return. But he did his best and that’s all that matters to overcome complications.
