Calling and texting are ways we communicate from far distances. However, I feel as if texting is something that has less gravity than calling, but is more of a confirmation that gives a reminder in a way. But what I think may have more of a difference as I age, the methods having different purposes and meanings. Here’s what I think of what’s best for me when it comes to calling or texting.
Texting is something I do often to remind others as it feels more appropriate and more of a nudge when it comes to an interaction. I love texting as a tool to communicate on how someone is doing and such, as calling seems unnecessary for friendly conversation. It also is great for sending things like grocery lists to get food, as the message will stay there permanently unless deleted. But, when trying to urgently get someone’s attention it falls short as it doesn’t really signal or alert someone loud and long enough. Overall, texting is good for seeing conversations you last had, seeing a path of a relationship growing into a friendship.
Calling someone has a better advantage, as it captures the essence of many sensory factors and pragmatic scenarios. Calling captures the emotions of a conversation, as well as being much more warming in a sense of hearing their actual voice. The veracity of it is also quite unparalleled to texting as it ensures to me that the person I’m talking to is the actual person. It also serves as a great alert tool to tell others if I’m in danger, but the clear factor of them actually picking up serves as a disadvantage as the message I try to put out can be easily missed and not successfully delivered. It leaves no context as it doesn’t usually show what you said in a notification afterwards.
In conclusion, I would need to call more in a situation where I was in the workplace and needed long-distance communication. Calling feels more appropriate to use as it helps get what I need in almost an instant; the limit being a voice message and the possibility of not being picked up, but it still gets the message across. Also, as I get older, there is a possibility that my distance grows between my parents and me, making calling an instantaneous and heartwarming welcome as I hear their voice. So, calling is more relevant to me as I age than texting.
