A simple dial could make a difference, calling someone about important information or even to give an explanation can make all the difference how it is received. Calling for some people is very “out” and texting is the “in”, texting isn’t new anymore but has changed how we communicate and reach out to others. Picking up the phone and calling someone has faded out of most day to day interactions.
Most people like texting instead of calling because it can be more convenient to your everyday life, except for when you need to have an important conversation with someone or even to properly communicate how you feel. Calling someone can make all the difference how the other person can interpret the message, not being able to understand the tone and facial expressions can also be nearly impossible over text and can result in a lot of misunderstanding. For example, texting someone to hangout and you can’t make it that day can be taken differently over text because you are lacking the tone and behavioral communication you would get from a phone call explaining why you can’t make it.
Although texting can be used improperly, it is still useful for quick and expedient communication for things. The advantages to texting are usually a quick, short, expedient way to communicate with someone, additionally, text messages can be useful at places like school, work, in the car, etc. In case of an emergency in school, a text message would be the best way to communicate your safety because calling is usually not encouraged. This could also apply to workplaces as well, in the middle of a shift they don’t want you to have a phone call where a couple of quick texts could do the job.
Picking up the phone and calling someone in situations could prevent a lot of confusion or hurt feelings because miscommunication is a very common problem when using texting. A disadvantage of calling could be someone not having the time or being in a good place to speak on the phone. An advantage of calling could be someone who you maybe haven’t talked to or seen in a while could be a good way to reconnect or catch up with someone you don’t see a lot. Entering your “adult” life I think how you communicate professionally and personally among your peers varies.
Speaking on the phone can reveal tone so picking up the phone to call someone about key information or to give an explanation can make all the difference in how it is received.
