One night sometime over the summer, I was invited over to my Aunt Jennifer’s house for a celebratory dinner. My cousin, Santasia, had graduated from high school and all of the family was invited over. My aunt had made some elaborate dish of food that I have never heard of before, and there was an odd smell coming from it. This smell piqued my curiosity and made me want to ask what was used when making the dish, but I was worried that I may seem rude or inconsiderate, so I hesitated to ask.
Although, as the dinner continued, I still wondered what mystery ingredient was used during the process of making the dish and my need to know what it was increased. As I noticed that other people were talking about the food, and engaging in conversation, and my aunt wasn’t getting upset by the questions or comments being made, my nerves about asking my question calmed. I finally made the decision to ask and when I asked, “Aunty Jen, what did you use for ingredients when you made this dish?” in a respectful and curious manner, she was more than happy to share her process and engage in conversation. She knows that I want to pursue Culinary in the future, so she had no problem answering my question and also giving me tips and tricks for when I make my own dishes. I was more than relieved to know that I didn’t upset her by asking my question and even happy that it sparked a conversation between the two of us that continued throughout the night.
The night progressed and I had no more anxiety about questions that I had and I was able to easily ask questions and engage in conversation. While I was afraid to ask a question about something someone made because it may have seemed rude or inconsiderate, this moment helped to remind me that there is no such thing as a stupid question and it’s okay to be curious and ask questions. My aunt continues to answer questions I have, especially food-related questions, and even invites me over to help her make food. My aunt has helped me become more confident in my life and I thank her tremendously for it.
