Oak Hill Humor Squad

OHHS, Oak Hill Humor Squad, a group that started with just a few peers and a kick-butt teacher. We started the group because of all our passions to make people laugh and talent in improv. We thrive on the aspiration of others’ ability to dispend disbelieve. With the current deprivation of members in our club, we have not been able to perform as much, but hopefully that can change in years to come. I will not be there after this year; I will have graduated and off to college, sadly.

My favorite parts of the Humor Squad was the laughter we shared to others, along with the moments under the spotlight trying to come up with the next joke that will ignite the audience with roars of laughter. Though the audience might be small, we still got them alive. In the acting world, the one thing we hate is when the audience is “Dead,” the state in which they are watching and not interacting. The best moment for me on stage being part of the improv team would be the time I made my “TikTok” joke. There I am sitting on the stage waiting my turn to join the fun, all of a sudden I hear Mrs. Barker yell on the speaker that the Humor Squad is going to play Prop is not a Prop. A game very similar to “chair is not a chair,” where we as improv members are given a random object and have to make a pun about it. For instance, if an actor was given a banana, they can make it out to be either a cell phone or even as extreme as a gun. In my situation, after a few different props have been used, I have noticed that the audience are more likely to get a joke rounded on social media or pop cutlery, for our last prop we were given a box of Tic Tacs. I was not the first person up, but somewhere after 4 or 5 jokes, I got a brilliant idea. Walking up to the box of Tic Tacs, I feel my heart bump loud and I get nervous. I grab the box and look at it strangely and without thought I say, “I was told I could watch funny videos on an app called Tic tac.” The crowd bursts with laughter and in that one moment, I feel a great deal of enjoyment in myself, like I have won the lottery. The moments like this one make improv so much fun, being able to stand on a stage without fear, or worry of what people will think of you.
