SATB Music Festival

Ever year since I hit high school, I’ve been trying out for a spot in the All-State Music Festival. This group is handpicked from auditions of thousands of high school students throughout Maine. Only around 400 of the best music students are picked to participate. The groups are split up between band and choir. With my passion for music and singing, I have auditioned for the group four years in a row and am very proud to say I have represented Oak Hill at All State for all four of those years.

Every year at audtions for All-State the same nervousness hits, ‘Am I going to make it?’ ‘Is this going to be the year I flop and don’t make it?’ Along the process, there have been some speed bumps, from learning the music to transportation. This year, our auditioning students were unable to audition in person. I was a little disappointed; I feel that my peers would have made it this year if they were able to have the same experience I had for the last two years.

All State has always been a big part of me throughout my high school career, and without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Every year, it has been the highlight of my time in high school. The people I get to meet and the friends that I make, make the experience 100% worth it. The freedom of sleeping on a college campus and being able to go to a rehearsal hall every day for four days in a row is a blast. The bird has finally flown out of the nest and spread its wings, preparing for the future.

Being in All State for four years, I have built strength in my ability to lead. Also being in All State, the nervous feeling of singing in front of people has gone away. I feel like I am able to take my talent and use it to teach my peers tricks and skills I have learned from past endeavors. My leadership skills in class have been enhanced because I have experience being a part of the top choir in the state of Maine.

With the knowledge I have now, and the understanding of standing alone, I will be more apt to take more time to listen to what others have to say when they talk about something they have had to stand alone for.
