Self-driving cars are a huge innovation that redefines transportation, they can offer saftey and efficancy benefits, technology has come a very long way since the invention of cars allowing us to start building things like self-driving cars, but they also have a long way to go with ethical and regulatory challenges.
Automotive companies have been working on self-driving cars for a few years now. For example Tesla’s come standard with autopilot which also for a completly touch-free driving experience. With this it brought a bunch of safety and efficancy benefits. “Tesla cars using Autopilot are over nine times less likely to get into an accident than human drivers in other manufacturers’ vehicles.” This shows some of the saftey benefits of self-driving cars.
Along with the safety and efficiency benefits, comes some very advanced technology. including how they created the self-driving feature. This is a quote that helps with the understanding of how Tesla technology works, “All vehicles built for the North American market will feature Tesla Vision which uses multiple cameras and powerful neural net processing to see the environment around the vehicle and deliver Autopilot features.”
Even though there are lots of good points to self-driving cars, they also get faced with a lot of ethical and regulatory changes. For example when “driving” these cars you still need to be able to have full control of the vehicle at all times because they can’t be 100% trusted yet. “In the case of a Tesla (or any other vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems) drivers, intentionally falling asleep at the wheel is considered reckless driving.” Even though the vehilce is driving itself you can still get into trouble for the actions of the vehicle.
In conclusion, Self-driving cars are a great way to change the modern way of transportation, but along with the safety/efficiency benefits, and the super advanced technology that allows us to start using self-driving cars, they also have a long long journey overcoming the ethical and regulatory challenges they are faced with. Would you invest in a self-driving vehicle?
