The advertisements I typically see on Instagram consist of two things. One of those things is hunting gear. This is things like duck decoys, treestands, waders, and the newest turkey hunting contraptions that they seem to come out with daily. Every single one of them says they are the next best thing but if you fall for that you’ll see most of the time things like that are pretty average. The other one of these things is vehicle parts. Specifically for jeeps and other off-road machines. Like new wheels and tires. or new headlights. Personalized advertising can be a huge help to companies by pushing their product directly to the people that would be interested but they do raise concerns about privacy.
Based on the advertisements that I see you would think I have a private stocker that tells them what to give me for ads. Sometimes they are so specific it is scary. There have been many times that I’ve heard people say things like how they mentioned needing something and a few hours later an ad pops up for it on Facebook. I didn’t really believe this until the other day my jeep blew the radiator. I didn’t look up radiators or anything to do with Jeep parts and about an hour after I got off the phone with my dad telling him about what happened I was sitting there scrolling on Instagram, guess what I get an ad for an enhanced cooling system for xj’s. So that was a bit creepy and you could definitely say that they do a really good job at personalizing those ads.
Another thing I see all the time are ads for hunting gear and if you didn’t already know hunting is a huge part of my life. All the things I listed in the first paragraph I use every single time I go hunting. These advertisements appeal to me because I´m always looking for new gear to hunt with. My Jeep is another big part of who I am because of the time and effort I put into it. I spend hours working on it for days at a a time. I take pride in my vehicle. So those advertisements about Jeeps and other off-road machines are interesting to me, so I can look into buying something new for my next project.
In conclusion, my advertisements that I see on social media, are related to who I am perfectly. The ads I see persuade me to look into something new every day. Whether it’s new hunting gear, or new parts for my Jeep. Sometimes they are so personalized they can be creepy. It makes you stop to think about how safe the internet really is and you wonder how much of your personal information is out there, but at least I’m not getting ads about things I don’t like.
