Would You Consider Graffiti Art?

All around the world graffiti is seen. More importantly, people use graffiti to express themselves or their views. Although graffiti is expression some people think of it as a mess, or an eyesore to the public. With all put together, I couldn’t disagree more. Graffiti to me, puts an additional attractiong to a loctation and creates a sense of creativity. Some factors that make graffiti work is placement, color scheme, and the art work itself. I believe that with all of the hard work, thought process, and talent, Graffiti should be fully recogonized as art.

Graffiti placement is something that artists have to think about a lot. Some places you have to leave alone, and respects its original beauty. This can be difficult for artists sometimes because in smaller towns they’re might be less blank space, but in larger cities, its much more populated. “Although graffiti art is usually more common in big cities, the reality is that it can occur in almost any community, big or small.”(Dolan) This helps people understand that art can be added pretty much anywhere to add character and details. Although adding graffiti art to the Eiffel tower probably wouldn’t go so well but graffiti artists usually have a good knowledge of where they can add their work, “The artist’s intention is to produce a work of art” (Graffiti as Art) To me, this makes graffiti a lot more beautiful because of the thought process put into it.

The colors of a graffiti piece can really help people view it as art. If the colors of the piece completely throw off the aesthetic of the location, its understandable why people would get upset. The color schemes of graffiti can go along with the colors of the building or location its painted. Sometimes if there’s a really dull building or part of a town artist will be hired to design and paint on those walls. With the varieties of colors, style, and size, graffiti artists have to stay in the loop with their art, “larger pieces require planning and imagination and contain artistic elements like color and composition.”(Graffiti as Art) this helps people see the graffiti as art because its correlating with the trends “Like all other artistic forms, graffiti has experienced movements or changes in style”(Graffiti as Art) This supports the idea of graffiti being art because is can be created timeless or done in a popular style. Making art ‘timeless’ is a skill that lots of graffiti artists also carry because of how much style in a town can change.

Graffiti artists sometimes create artwork that goes along with the history of the location they are working at. This creates a good story and helps keep a remembrance of the towns story, rather than having something random, it add character. Sometimes it could be a portrait of someone important or an old landmark that no longer exists there.

Through all of these reasons I believe that people should consider graffiti art. I think that it takes a lot of talent, hard work, and time, especially for the bigger wall and bridge pieces. I believe people should put more respect into graffiti artists.
