Patience is a virtue. That’s what my grandmother would always tell me when I was misbehaving or getting unto fights with my sister, Gertrude. Ever since childhood, there had been a void in my personality, there would be times that I was anxious or worried for the outcome of an action or the change of something that I had done. At this point, I would often mess up on a lot of things because I wasn’t able to take that time to wait. Like the time we were arguing over the Freddy Frazzbear and we full on yelled at each other.
Growing up, I would always spend time at my grandmother’s house. Gertrude and I would sleep over from Friday after school and leave Sunday morning when my father would have left to do the dump run every weekend.
My sister and I would love waiting until the weekend to have a fun filled time with my grandmother. But our fights were getting progressivly worse and more frequent. This meant that my grandmother would have to endure the times that we would bicker and snap at each other. In these situations my grandmother would always try to calm us down with something, whether it would be by telling us to take turns or separating us. After a while had passed, and Gertrude and I had calmed down, my grandmother would tell us that we would some day get along and love each other like siblings rather than get into fights all the time. Now these fights would range from many things, sometimes a small bicker over small things like rights over the computer to play Roblox, or a hands on fight because Gertrude would take something from me–like Freddy Fazzbear. In the end, my grandmother would pull us aside when things were pretty much summed up between Gertrude and I to say “patience is a virtue.”
Looking back on it, this time that I spent with my grandmother and the wisdom that she taught us about learning to love each other and time can heal, means a lot to me, as an almost-adult, it is important to have patience. To wait for good to come, and to learn that things take time to heal and to start. Whether you are trying to fix a friendship or simply just waiting for something to come in the mail that means a lot to you. Patience isn’t just “waiting for a package” it’s a lot deeper, you need long term patience in order to deal with life, you need patience in a relationship, in family, and to take care of life. Eventually, as I got older and learned more about family bonds and relationships I furthermore understand the meaning of the saying “patience is a virtue”.
