The cabin of laughter

When I was younger I participated in a camp for a week and I had the experience of a lifetime. The people I met there have a lasting impact on me even to this day, I remember many things, the zypline, the friends, the game wardens we were paired with, and laughter all throughout the day.

My fondest memories all include my group of camp mates with me, there was Thomas, Alex, Zander, Chloe, Aubrey, and James. these six people were my closest friends for the entire time and I’ve yet to forget the impact they had on me. Showing up to Camp North Woods was scary for a younger me, and I was nervous from day one, one thing pulled me out of this social nervousness and that was laughter. this started with Rex who was one of our counselors making jokes and being his wild self, during our get-to-know-each-other kickball game. We all slowly got more comfortable and made shy yet impactful introductions to each other, due to his crazed state. Rex was running around wildly from base to base grabbing people and running them on his shoulders, or making it seem like he was being chased by the smallest girl in the group. This led me to my closest friend for this week, Thomas. We met in the midst of Rex’s running rapid and started with a laugh as we bumped into each other on the base knocking over the unassuming college counselor. As we got up we recognized each other from the earlier part of the day in check-in when we put all our stuff in the cabin for the week. As we got up our other counselor Shannon ran over and pulled us both all the way to the medical cabin to get checked for concussions. We both laughed the whole way and called her mother Shannon as she laughed with a certain level of concern in her tone. As we wait for the nurse we start to talk about the hit and form a plan, to trick the counselor and the nurse into thinking we had hit each other so hard we switched minds. We traded answers to questions that only each other would know and headed into the room one by one and our plan was set into motion. The nurse asked us questions such as what our names are, and how it happen, but us being the delinquents we were we had switched roles as we talked about. Thomas who was the one running from first to second was now me, and I who ran from home to second due to my hit was not Thomas. We ended up being cleared only to be met by Shannon who asked how we were, she first looked at Thomas and asked how he was doing, he looked very confused when she used his name instead of Colby, but she moved on. Then she asked me the same question, I looked back in her direction and asked her why she is calling me Colby, and following with a convincing my name was Thomas. She brushed it off as just playing with us but we could both see the confusion in her eyes. As we got back to our cabin with ice packs on our heads Shannon walked in to talk to Rex about us, Shortly after Rex called our names and we came over to hear him ask why we switched names. We said we didn’t know what he was talking about, and he played it off until Shannon left. As the door closed behind her as she retreated to the girl’s cabin Rex burst out laughing us to follow, as the rest of the cabin lay confused we explained our story of confusing Shannon and the Nurse to be followed by roaring laughter, and chronic tears due to the nature of our acts. This made the boys’ cabin the closest as we all told stories that made the rest laugh through half the night until we had to sleep after noise complaints from the neighboring cabins.

We all wake up with the same energy and grow closer as the days go by, our cabin ends up winning the camp champions for friendship, all due to a silly practical joke that causes mountains of laughter. It still makes me wonder to this day what my experience would have been like if it wasn’t for this silly joke me and Thomas crafted late on the first day of camp.
