In the digital age of today, keeping a positive digital footprint is very much needed. This is because it reflects the professionalism and values of a person. It can also open doors in life to educational, social and professional opportunities. Students can formulate positive digital footprints through social media, and also using the internet in other ways like competitions that show off their talents and passions can be good for their
A positive digital footprint is complex extension to a person’s character and skills online. Most employers and schools look for info that might help them better understand the person’s personality, skills and professionalism. Evidence of awards and projects and sometimes participation in meaningful groups helps make a person’s online profile look good. “”If someone is working hard, being creative, helping others or receiving awards, then surely promoting these skills and achievements online is a good thing.” A positive footprint helps people stand out from the crowd and builds credibility which can help with building your future. (Jalger).
Using social media and the internet correctly can lead to formulating a good digital footprint. Many use social media like TikTok and YouTube for things like networking and showing off their interests and their passions and how they contribute to groups. “Although I’ve been quiet here, I’ve continued to do service work ever since I started this project.” Students can use their internet presence to promote causes they care about and could create meaningful connections, which can lead to employers choosing you over someone else. (Angela).
Unfortunately there are risks to using the internet and social media. If someone uses them incorrectly it can lead to a negative digital footprint, which can lead to future opportunities being limited, which can affect someone’s whole life. Some employers have lists of “”ten negative things which employers don’t want to see online,” like bad skills in being professional and being controversial. Trying to not do anything on the employers list will help your chances at creating a positive digital footprint. This is why you should be wary of what you do in particular on the internet and social media because if not, it could change your future since employers are looking into your footprint. (Jalger).
Having a good digital footprint over a bad one can be very beneficial for your future, it shows the professionalism and values of a person. As long as you avoid controversies and negative behavior and instead try to be responsible and a good person, you will be able to create a positive footprint while using social media. Ultimately, shaping a positive online identity is not just about avoiding harm but about showcasing the best of what one has to offer in the digital world.
