My Boy Benji

A few months ago, around October or early November, I was seventeen years old and working at Dunkin’ in Sabattus as the order taker in the drive thru. The person next to me on my left cashing people out, was Carla. Carla is around her early 30’s with brown hair and eyes and glasses. It was late moring around 10 am and kind of slow compared to the regular flow of people coming through. I was finishing up taking an order when a customer at the window started waving to me. She appeared to be blonde and middle-aged. I was confused, but I waved back.

She said to me from her car that “Benji came up and gave me a hug today!” I have family that live nearby and occasionally stop by and I assumed maybe Benji was a distant cousin that I didn’t know about, however I did not recognize the lady at the window. Carla asked me “Do you know her?” refering to the random woman in the drive thru. I thought about it for a second before telling her I have no idea who this lady is. The lady in the window went on to say that “our kids go to daycare together.” Carla picked up what the lady was trying to say and started smiling a bit. The lady asked me “Aren’t you Benji’s dad?” I told her “Ma’am, I’m seventeen.”

Carla was crying laughing after hearing this and had to step off the floor. The lady in the window goes, “I’m sorry, you look just like him have a great day” and drorve off. Carla said, “I guess you’re Benji’s dad” as she contined to laugh and tell all of my other coworkers.

Although this moment is not brought up very often, it is still a very funny moment to look back on. Carla still asks me about Benji and how he’s doing, so I tell her that he’s doing great and improvise a quick adventure with my fake son.
