Social media is a blessing and a curse. While social media can bring along new friends and make you connect with people you never knew you could. It can very much ruin relationships and make you an enemy to the people around you. Social media can ruin how you feel; emotionally and physically. Social media has some benefits but has more drawbacks.
Social media as a platform is a blessing as it connects you to the world around you. It helps you connect to people all around the world and make connections with people you never thought you could. Social media also has a tendency to promote cyber bullying. It makes people feel as though you have to always stay connected online and keep up with the world when truly it’s better to stay offline and keep to yourself. As a society we have become so clinged to our phones, and we need to learn to be less connected to them. If we as a society become dependent on social media to poetry our life stories, it can become dangerous. It’s really easy to ruin your reputation on social media in a matter of seconds. It only takes one post to ruin your whole life. While social media can bring people together, it can easily take people apart. I have personally seen a lot of relationships end over one post, or one comment. When we as a society rely that much on social media to determine our opinions of people, it will eventually be our downfall.
Social media has also brought a lot of good too. It connects us with people of different countries and ethnicities, different backgrounds, and even different languages. It connects us on a different level to bring everyone together. But again this can be a blessing and a curse. We’ve all seen world leaders make a fool of themselves on Twitter. People have a tendency to just say what they want without thinking it through. It gives us the power of connection, but as a society we take that too far. We don’t think through what we say and are quick to call out others on small mistakes.
When social media is used correctly it is a blessing, but a lot of people misuse the privilege of connection to others. We as a society need to take steps to be better before we go far with social media. We need to think through what we say before we just blurt out whatever comes to mind. Social media and connection of this caliber is a privilege, and we can’t misuse it and use it as a weapon. It isn’t ammo against others, it’s a way of communication. When we say hurtful things over the phone and make others feel low, that’s a misuse of social media. I think that as a society we can learn to grow, and make social media a tool for the good, but right now it just kind of sucks. When we decide to mature and stop attacking others for their beliefs and opinions, that’s when we can truly take advantage of social media.
