Rule# 6: …Or the Bible

Chapter 6: …Or the Bible

When the Bible is referenced, or implied in a novel,  it usually tends to point out someones loss of innocence. The Bible is also a classic tale of difficulties and tension that exists everywhere between people. With their caring and pain and guilt, pride and love (Thomas C. Foster). A story line that goes along with the Bible is a story that never grows old. Of coarse not all stories of religion are straight to the point. In fact, in many modern & postmodern novels the Bible metaphor are used as irony, however this can cause trouble within the audience. Author’s use biblical references to add dimension, or depth to the story. It creates a hero figure that we subconsciously recognize as God.

Movie Example: The Chronicles of Narnia

Why: Aslan is Jesus Christ,  Jadis, the white witch is Satan. The story line mimics the Bible story of the resurrection of Jesus and the fall of Satan.

Examples used in text: Absalom, Absalom! / Tongus of Flame / Four Quarters / The Waste Land / Beowulf
