Earth. It is our home and place of safety. Although, there are times where the earth is cruel to the people and life it holds. Natural disasters are only one example of how the earth is cruel. One minute everything could be tranquil and happy. Then the next thing you know, a natural disaster could wipe out all you ever knew of your home. These natural disasters have influenced me to think about how quickly my life could change.
A recent example of the earth being cruel through natural disasters would be in 2017 when the chain of hurricanes occurred. It began with Harvey, then Irma, and then Maria. Many people all over the United States were affected by these hurricanes. Most of which were the people in the middle of them. They were scared to see themselves, family, homes, and everything around them be torn to pieces. People were left in floods and without homes. Then there were people, like me, who had family members out were the hurricanes had stormed through. With my family being in the middle of all the disasters, there was many days and nights in home worrying about them. It seemed like we were all constantly watching the news to see the status on where my family lived. Scrolling through social media and seeing all the videos of the hurricanes, statistics, and emotional posts made it hard on my family and I. With all this information being thrown at us we didn’t know what to trust or how to react to anything. Everyone in the same shoes as me were left worrying about what would happen to their families and if they would be okay or not. All of this has lead me to think in a whole new way.
Natural disasters have influenced my thinking because you never know when your life could be wiped clean. One day could be perfect. Then imaging the people around me find out a hurricane, tornado, or any other natural disaster would be coming soon, is some of the scariest news anyone could receive. I have learned how lucky I am that I live in a place with rare natural disaster occurrences.
In conclusion, the earth can be cruel, although it does help people to realize things they may not have noticed before. Having family members down where the chain of hurricanes took place this year has really taught me to take my life and where I live for granted. I could never imagine what the people effected by Harvey, Irma, and Maria had gone through.
